UCO Stumbles In Overtime In Season Opener

Central Oklahoma Falls 75-73 To Mary In 2023-24 Season Opener

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – Central Oklahoma scrapped and fought with Mary Friday afternoon in the 2023-24 season opener, but the Bronchos came up on the wrong side of a 75-73 overtime decision.
 
UCO (0-1) plays Northwestern Oklahoma State Saturday afternoon to wrap up the two-day Central Region Challenge at Northeastern State.
 
Friday, the Bronchos trailed for almost all of the game. UCO was tied twice with the Marauders from Bismarck, North Dakota, but Central trailed by as many as nine points in the first quarter, and by 10 at halftime, 34-24. It was a four-point deficit heading to the fourth quarter.
 
But a 7-2 run by the Bronchos gave UCO its first lead of the game. Alena Wilson scored first to cut it to two before Mary pushed it back to four. Then a 3-pointer by Reagan Fox made it a one-point game and Wilson knocked down a jumper on the baseline to give UCO a 49-48 lead.
 
Then the back and forth kept going. There were six lead changes down the stretch. The last in the fourth coming when Fox hit a jumper with 23 seconds left. That made it 60-59. Lexi Foreman added a free-throw to give the Bronchos a two-point lead, but a jumper in the paint with eight seconds left by Mary tied the game at 61.
 
UCO couldn't get a shot off and the game went to overtime.
 
In the extra period, Mary built a four-point lead and never trailed again. Down by four, Karly Wadsworth hit a 3-pointer in the corner to make it 71-70 with 26 seconds left. She did it again with nine seconds left to make it 74-73.
 
UCO had one last chance, but LaKysia Johnson turned the ball over with one second to play in overtime. Mary missed two free-throws and time expired on the rebound of the second shot.
 
Fox led the Bronchos, and all scorers, with 21 points. The sophomore from Blanchard, Oklahoma went 6-for-17 from the floor in her UCO debut. She hit three 3-pointers on five attempts and went 6-for-7 from the free-throw line. Fox added six rebounds and three steals before she fouled out.
 
Wadsworth scored 11 points off the bench. She went 4-for-11 overall, 3-for-6 from behind the arc, and also had two steals in the game.
 
Wilson made it three in double figures, scoring 10 points on 5 of 8 shooting. She had seven boards, two steals, and two blocks.
 
Foreman scored seven points and slew of Bronchos had four. Alexis Lewis, Gracee Miller, Caley Young, Johnson, and Natalie Stice all scored four points.
 
Aliyah Llanusa chipped in three and Aspen Williston added one.
 
Llanusa had a team-high eight reobounds and seven assists.
 
The Bronchos had 12 steals in the game with six different Bronchos swiping at least one.
 
UCO shot 35.6 percent overall, 40 percent from behind the arc, and 78.9 percent from the free-throw line. Central Oklahoma was 26-for-73 overall, 6-for-15 from outside, and 15-for-19 from the stripe.
 
Central Oklahoma looks to get into the win column Saturday against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The Rangers from Alva, Oklahoma play the host NSU Riverhawks Friday night.
