No. 7 Bronchos Push Win Streak To 10 Games

Central Oklahoma Turns Back Missouri Western Saturday Afternoon To Extend Winning Streak To Double Digits

EDMOND – No. 7 Central Oklahoma overcame a slow start and powered its way past Missouri Western Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House. The Bronchos won their 10th consecutive game, topping the visiting Griffons 65-54.

"Our defense was really good today," UCO head men's coach Bob Hoffman said. "They really slowed everything but our defense met the challenge. While our offense wasn't great, we got the job done."

Central Oklahoma improved to 17-1 on the season with the victory and the Bronchos are now 11-1 in MIAA play.

Camryn Givens led UCO with 17 points on a 7-for-11 night from the floor. He went 1-for-2 on 3-point attempts and was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. He also had three boards in the contest.

Luke Haasl had a huge game off the bench, putting up 13 points to go with six blocked shots. He went 5-for-5 from the floor, including one 3-pointer. He was 2-for-6 from the free-throw line. Haasl is the 13th UCO player ever to block six shots in one game. That mark is tied for 10th on the single game list.

Preston Aymond also scored in double figures, posting an 11-point performance on 4 of 7 shooting. He went 1-for-2 from behind the arc and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Aymond, who scored all 11 points in the first half, also had four rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot.

Curtis Haywood also chipped in all over the place. He scored nine points to go with six assists, five rebounds and one block shot. Danquez Dawsey added seven points and Jalyn Turner and Mike Quick Jr. both scored two points.

Jaden Wells, the leading scorer in the MIAA, only scored four points on Saturday but the sharp-shooting sophomore left the game early. He only played 20 minutes before suffering an ankle injury and exiting with four points and no made 3-pointers. Wells did manage six rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Central Oklahoma needed to shake off a slow start on Saturday to push its win streak to 10 games. The Bronchos led 5-0 after two minutes of play, but trailed 9-5 just over six minutes into the action. UCO tied the game, 9-9, with 11:30 to play in the opening half, but MWSU followed with a 7-0 run to go in front, 16-9, with 8:49 to play.

UCO again fought back and tied the game, 17-17, with seven minutes left in the half, but again, trailed 23-19 moments later.

But that's when UCO put together an 8-0 run and took the lead, then never looked back. The Bronchos got layups from Haywood and Aymond before Aymond got a pair of free-throws. Haasl finished a layup with 1:19 to play in the half to give UCO a 27-23 lead.

The Bronchos took a 29-26 lead into halftime.

Missouri Western made a little run to start the second half and tied the game for the fifth time, 33-33, with 13:51 to play. The game was tied again at 39 and at 41 before Haasl had a nifty and-1 play that gave the Bronchos a 44-41 lead with 8:15 left in the game.

UCO got up by six points soon after that, then extended the lead to double digits down the stretch, eventually pulling ahead by 12 points in the final minute.

UCO finished the game shooting 47.9 percent, making 23 of 48 shots. The Bronchos were 5-for-15 from behind the 3-point line and 14-for-22 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma finished off a 2-0 week including a victory over No. 4 Northwest Missouri on Thursday night. The Bronchos will appear in the national rankings next week for a 17th consecutive week, which will be the longest streak ever for the men's basketball program.
