UCO To Play For MIAA Championship Sunday In Edmond

Bronchos Beat Northwest Missouri To Clinch Fourth Straight Trip To Finals

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma is heading to the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Final for the fourth time in the last five years after the Bronchos beat Northwest Missouri 4-0 Saturday morning at Edmond Center Court.

Central Oklahoma, the No. 1 seed in the postseason championship, knocked off No. 4-seeded Northwest Missouri and only need 1 hour, 43 minutes to do so.

"We wanted to come out and be aggressive and go after it today and the girls did a great job of doing just that," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "I'm proud of them for playing as well as they did today and now we get the opportunity to play for the championship."

Central Oklahoma made its first appearance in the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Final in 2018 but came up short to longtime rival Northeastern State. The Bronchos returned in 2019 and won the title for the first time with a victory over former league member Southwest Baptist. There was no season in 2020, but UCO made its third trip in four years in 2021 and won it all for the second time.

Now, Sunday at 10 a.m., Missouri Western awaits the Bronchos from a third title.

"One of our goals was to win conference in the regular season and we did that and another one of our goals was to win the postseason championship," Vann said. "We have a chance and we're going for it."

Missouri Western is the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Griffons of St. Joseph, Missouri beat No. 6 Newman, 4-0, in the quarterfinals on Friday, and outlasted No. 2 Washburn on Saturday in the semifinals, 4-3.

UCO and Missouri Western met once this season and the Bronchos won 7-0 in St. Joseph.

The two schools have met once in the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship. Central Oklahoma won 4-0 in the semifinals of the 2021 tournament.

Saturday morning, Central made quick work of Northwest Missouri. The Bronchos got the doubles point with wins by Mae Canete and Christine Canete at No. 1 doubles (6-0) and by Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks at No. 2 doubles (6-4).

Mae then blitzed her opponent in singles competition to give Central a 2-0 lead in the match. She won her first set in 11 minutes, 6-0, then won 6-3 to take the point in the second set.

Christine was right behind her with a win at No. 2 singles. She won 6-1, 6-1 to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead.

Grace Chadick clinched the semifinal win with a 6-0, 6-0 demolition of her opponent at No. 4 singles to give Central Oklahoma the 4-0 lead, the match, and the fourth consecutive appearance in the MIAA Women's Tennis Championship Final.
