Central Oklahoma Opens Postseason With Statement Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened the postseason Friday morning at Edmond Center Court and the top-seeded Bronchos cruised to a convincing victory over Northeastern State, 4-0, in the MIAA Championship Quarterfinals.

Central Oklahoma improved to 18-1 on the season with the win. The Bronchos advance to the MIAA Championship Semifinals and UCO will take on fourth-seeded Northwest Missouri Saturday at 10 a.m.

"It was good to get the postseason started with a win," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "We wanted to make sure we played well today and we did. Top to bottom, everyone in the lineup played really well today."

Central Oklahoma conceded just three points in eight matches against MIAA school this season and Northeastern State got one of those points in Edmond earlier this Spring. But that wouldn't be the case on Friday.

Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar won 6-0 at No. 3 doubles in just 22 minutes. The duo put the Bronchos in the driver's seat and set the tone for what would be a quick match.

Mae Canete and Christine Canete, the No. 1 ranked doubles team in the country, then won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and clinched the early point for the Bronchos.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks were winning 5-2 at No. 2 doubles when the match was called with Central clinching the point.

In Singles competition, it was more of the same.

Mae won 6-1, 6-0 in a hurry at No. 1 singles to give UCO a 2-0 lead, then Abidullina won by the same score at No. 3 singles to make it 3-0.

Grace Chadick finished it off, picking up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles to clinch the match for the Bronchos.

Christine was ahead 6-2, 5-3 at No. 2 singles, Brocks led 7-5, 2-2 at No. 5 singles, and Buntrock led 6-2, 5-2 at No. 6 singles when those matches were called.

Central Oklahoma advances to the MIAA Championship Semifinals on Saturday and will take on Northwest Missouri. UCO beat NWMSU 5-2 in St. Joseph, Missouri last week.

No. 2-seeded Washburn and No. 3 Missouri Western will play in the other semifinal at 10 a.m. Saturday. The 2022 MIAA Championship is scheduled for 10 a.m. Sunday at Edmond Center Court.
