No. 6 UCO Routs No. 25 Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – No. 6 Central Oklahoma pushed its winning streak to eight matches Saturday with a 6-1 win over No. 25 Angelo State.

Central Oklahoma is now 14-1 following the non-conference win.

"Today was a good win for us and Angelo State made us work for it," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "It was our third match in three days and we drove a ways to get here after two conference games back home. It was good to see the team play as well as they did today."

Central Oklahoma nearly had a perfect week. The Bronchos beat MIAA challengers Fort Hays State and Nebraska Kearney on Thursday and Friday in Edmond. UCO won both contests 7-0 before Saturday's 6-1 victory.

Central picked up the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 but the squads played out all three positions and the Bronchos swept.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks won 6-0 at No. 1 doubles and Mae Canete and Lexi Penn won by the same score at No. 3 doubles. Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock won 7-6 (7-3) to make it a clean sweep.

UCO had a 3-0 lead not long into singles competition. Canete won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 in a matchup of two top-tier players. Canete is ranked No. 3 in the country in the latest ITA rankings and Angelo State's Dianela Rodriguez is ranked 11th. Canete moved quick to pickup another point for the Bronchos though.

Abidullina, ranked No. 25 in the country, picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to make it 3-0 in favor of the Bronchos.

Angelo State got its one point at No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Brocks.

All three remaining matches went three sets.

Grace Chadick dropped her first set 7-5, but came back to win at No. 3 singles with a 7-6 (11-9) win in the second set and a 12-10 win in the tiebreaker third set.

Buntrock won her first set, 6-1, but lost 7-5 in the second. She posted another 6-1 set victory in the third to win the match.

Boyar also lost her first set, 6-4, but responded with wins by the same score in both the second and third sets to get the victory.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the 2022 regular season next week with one more road non-conference matchup and a pair of road contests in MIAA play.

The Bronchos are scheduled to visit No. 10 Cameron on Tuesday before taking on No. 47 Northwest Missouri and No. 59 Washburn next weekend.

UCO and Washburn are currently tied for first in the MIAA standings with both squads 6-0 in league play. The dual on the final day of the season could settle the 2022 MIAA regular season champion.
