UCO Advances In KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Top-seeded Central Oklahoma won its postseason opener Thursday night at Municipal Auditorium, outpacing longtime rival Northeastern State 77-66 in the quarterfinals of the MIAA Basketball Championship presented by Citizen's Bank & Trust.

No. 17 Central Oklahoma, the regular season champions in the MIAA, advance to the semifinals for the fifth time in nine trips to the conference tournament. UCO will play Saturday at 6 p.m. the winner of Friday's quarterfinal matchup between rivals Emporia State and Washburn.

"That was a good team effort," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We had some guys that had really good numbers but I think today was a great team effort."

Isaiah Wade led all scorers with 23 points and had nine rebounds. Callen Haydon scored 21 points to go with 10 assists. Jaden Wells poured in 14 and Camryn Givens scored 10. Jalyn Turner's two points rounded out the scoring for the starters and Davon Richardson had all seven bench points for the Bronchos.

There were five lead changes in the game, but NSU's biggest lead was just two points. The game stayed close within single digits for most of the first half until Davon Richardson's and-1 three-point play with two seconds left in the first half.

UCO led by as many as 16 in the second half and led by double-digits for most of the latter 20 minutes. The closest NSU got in the second half was six points.

Central shot 44.6 percent from the floor Thursday, hitting 29 of 65 shots. UCO went 5-for-18 on 3-point attempts and 14-for-19 from the free-throw line.
