UCO Stumbles At SNU

BETHANY, Okla. – Central Oklahoma couldn't keep pace with a hot-hitting Southern Nazarene Wednesday and the Bronchos lost 9-6 in the non-conference matchup across the OKC metro at Feland Field.

Central Oklahoma is 11-10 on the season following the loss. The setback wrapped up five games in five days for UCO. The Bronchos hit the road this weekend to take on Fort Hays State in a three-game MIAA series beginning Friday in Hays, Kansas.

"We did a better job on offense and scored a run in several different innings," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "But they had two big innings and we couldn't make one of those big rallies."

Central Oklahoma scored in five of nine innings Wednesday, plating one run in four different innings. The Bronchos scored six off 10 hits.

Garrett Takamatsu led the Bronchos at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. He had one double and also scored one run. Clayton Peterson also had a multi-hit day. He went 2-for-3 with a double, walked twice, and scored three runs.

Trevor Stevens gave Central three batters with multiple hits. He went 2-for-3 and also drew a walk. Jaden Parsons went 1-for-4 but had a run scored and a run batted in. His one hit was a double.

Austin Lambert went 1-for-5 and Dave Janssen went 1-for-4.

Peterson scored Central's first run of the game in the top of the third inning, crossing the plate on a Takamatsu single to second base. That tied the game, 1-1.

Takmatsu picked up two more RBIs in the top of the fifth with a double down the left field line that scored Parsons and Peterson. That cut into a SNU lead and made it 5-3.

Parson's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth scored Gray and made it 5-4.

After Southern Nazarene pulled away to 9-4, Central got two more runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Takamatsu scored on an Alex Austin sacrifice fly. Then Takamatsu got his fourth RBI with another double down the left field line in the top of the eighth to score Peterson again.

Central scored often, but its 10 runners left on base hindered the high scoring attack.

The Bronchos used five arms to get through Wednesday's game.

Lawson Isaacs got the start and went two innings. He allowed the first run and also gave up four hits while striking out three batters.

Coby Grimsley, who took the loss on the day, gave up four runs on two hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings of work. He did strike out three on the afternoon.

Jase Farmer threw 1 1/3 and gave up two runs on three hits and one walk. He struck out two batters. Brian Skillman also made an appearance but threw just 1/3 of an inning in allowing two runs on one hit and one walk.

A.J. Ozorio-Brace threw the final 2 2/3 innings for the Bronchos. He allowed three hits and two walks, but no runs. He also struck out three in keeping Southern Nazarene under 10 runs.

Central Oklahoma will return to MIAA play this weekend. The Bronchos are 5-5 in league play. UCO took two of three from Missouri Western and Rogers State but was swept by Missouri Southern last weekend.
