UCO Finishes National Runners-Up At ITA Indoors

EDMOND – No. 3 Central Oklahoma finished national runners-up in the 2022 ITA Indoor National Championships Monday following a 4-0 loss to No. 1 Barry.

Central Oklahoma hosted the eight-team invitational at Edmond Center Court. It was the third installment of the national tourney. UCO, which has hosted each of the first three events, finished seventh in 2020, third in 2021, and now second in 2022.

"We were close in a lot of different areas," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "But obviously close doesn't cut it. Congrats to Barry on the win. Now we know what we need to do to get better and maybe we'll get a chance to play them again down the road."

Barry has won the previous four NCAA Division II national titles. The Buccaneers from Miami, Florida eliminated Central in the national semifinals last Spring.

Central Oklahoma got off to a hot start Monday morning. The Bronchos picked up a huge upset at No. 3 doubles to position themselves for the early point. Nikki Boyar and Blythe Buntrock won 6-4 over Barry's Daniela Farfan and Kim Moosbacher. The Barry duo is ranked No. 3 in the country in the latest ITA Doubles Top 25.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks had a 5-3 lead at No. 2 doubles, but the Bronchos let that one slip away and lost 7-5. A 6-4 win for Barry at No. 1 doubles gave the guests the doubles point.

Trailing 1-0, Central kept fighting.

Buntrock won a set at No. 6 singles and Abidullina won her first set at No. 3 singles. Christine Canete and Grace Chadick also had set point at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, but they both lost the first sets, 7-6.

Barry picked up wins at No. 5 and No. 1 singles to get a 3-0 lead in the match. Then after coming from behind to steal a set in No. 4 singles, Barry pulled away in the second set and took that position too for a 4-0 lead and win.

Central Oklahoma will take a week off before returning to the court. The Bronchos will make their first road trip of the season and then start up MIAA play with eight conference duals scheduled for March and April.
