No. 3 Central Oklahoma Tackles TJC

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis squad made it four in a row Sunday morning with a 5-2 victory over Tyler Junior College at Oak Tree Tennis Center.

UCO is the No. 3 ranked team in the country in the latest ITA national coaches' poll. TJC is the No. 1 ranked team in the latest ITA JUCO poll.

Central Oklahoma took the doubles point with two out of three wins before winning four of six matches in singles competition.

"We played really good doubles today and really good singles," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "This was a great overall team win. Midwestern State yesterday and Tyler Junior College today both have great players and great teams. I am proud of our team performance over these last two days."

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks picked up a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles and Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar picked up a win at No. 3 doubles by the same score.

In a top-tier showdown at No. 1 doubles, the top ranked teams in DII and JUCO went at it in a heated battle. Division II's No. 1 duo of Mae Canete and Christine Canet took on the No. 1 rated duo in JUCO and lost, 6-4.

But as the match turned to singles, UCO put it away.

Fourth-ranked Christine Canete picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles over JUCO's No. 3 Destinee Martins. The fifth-ranked Abidullina won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, and Brocks won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Buntrock also won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 over JUCO's 29th-ranked Yeva Kramarova to give Central five points in the match.

Mae Canete, ranked No. 2 in the ITA Division II Singles Top 50, lost 6-1, 4-6, 5-10 at No. 1 singles to JUCO's top-ranked singles player Lauren Anzalotta. It is just her second loss in her two-year career at Central. Grace Chadick also lost 6-3, 3-6, 2-10 at No. 4 singles to Abigail Wild, who is rated No. 7 in the ITA's JUCO rankings.

Central Oklahoma will now turn its attention to the ITA Indoor National Championship at Edmond Center Court Feb. 25-27. UCO is the third-seed in the tournament and will play sixth-seeded Columbus State in the first round.

This is the third annual ITA Indoor National Championship tournament. UCO has hosted all three editions and the Bronchos finished seventh in 2020 before a third-place finish in 2021.
