UCO Opens Indoor Championship With Win

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma opened the 2022 ITA Division II Women's Tennis Indoor National Championship with a 4-0 crushing of Columbus State Saturday at Edmond Center Court.

Central, ranked No. 3 in the country and the third seed in the eight-team invitational, blew through fifth-ranked and sixth-seeded Columbus State (Ga.). The Bronchos took two of three doubles matches for the early point, then picked up wins at No. 1, No. 4, and No. 2 to get the sweep.

"We played well today and that's a good way to start the tournament," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "It was important for us to start off on a good note and after the delays this week, I was impressed with how we did."

The tournament was scheduled to begin Friday but winter weather caused the delay of some teams' arrival to Edmond. There was no sign of rust on Saturday for the Bronchos.

Mae Canete and Christine Canete won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles and did so in just 25 minutes. Columbus State evened the early part of the match with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles though to bring a little excitement to the contest.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina, who was named MIAA Player of the Week earlier this week, along with Tizia Brocks, picked up a 6-3 win in the second position and gave Central the early 1-0 lead in the dual.

Mae then wasted no time giving the Bronchos a 2-0 lead. The No. 2 rated singles player in the country won 6-0, 6-0 at the top spot in the lineup.

Grace Chadick, ranked No. 21 in the latest ITA Singles Top 50, then won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 singles to make it 3-0.

Christine finished off the match with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to give Central the 4-0 sweep.

The Bronchos had two other matches at match point before Christine picked up the win.

Abidullina, at No. 3 singles, had a 6-4, 5-5 dual going and Blythe Buntrock was up 7-5, 5-2 at No. 6 singles before the match ended.

Central Oklahoma will advance to the ITA Indoor National Championship Semifinals Sunday. The Bronchos are scheduled to face UIndy at 5:30 p.m. The Bronchos lost to UIndy in last season's ITA Indoor National Championship Semifinals before finishing third in the tournament.
