EDMOND – Third-ranked Central Oklahoma is 3-0 after another non-conference victory on Saturday at Oak Tree Tennis Center. The Bronchos beat Midwestern State 5-2 in the matchup against the former Lone Star Conference foe from Wichita Falls, Texas.

UCO is the No. 3 team in the country according to the latest ITA Top 25. Midwestern State came to Edmond ranked No. 22 in the country.

"We played a solid nationally ranked team today and we played amazing doubles to start," UCO head tennis coach Joe Vann said. "Everyone was really energized and that carreid through into singles."

But Saturday it was all Central.

UCO opened the match with three blistering doubles contests. Mae Canete and Christine Canete, ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest ITA Doubles Top 25, won 6-0 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar then picked up a 6-1  win at the No. 3 spot in the lineup to clinch the doubles point for the Bronchos. Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Tizia Brocks won 6-0 as well at the No. 2 position to make it a clean sweep.

After the break and turn to singles competition, Central cruised ahead to victory.

Brocks was the first to finish at the No. 5 position. She won 6-1, 6-2 to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the dual. Christine and Abidullina then finished within a minute of each other to clinch the match.

Christine won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles before Abidullina won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. That made it 4-0 and secured Central a third consecutive win to open the season.

Mae made it 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top position next. Midwestern State picked up three-set wins at No. 6 and No. 4 respectively to get points on the scoreboard.

Mae is ranked No. 2 in the country in the latest ITA Singles Top 50, Christine is ranked No. 4 in the country, and Abidullina is ranked No. 5 in the country. All three are 3-0 to start the season.

Central Oklahoma will make a quick turnaround before returning to the court Sunday morning. UCO is scheduled to host Tyler Junior College at 9 a.m. at Oak Tree.

The Bronchos will then turn their attention to the third annual ITA Indoor National Championship. UCO is hosting the event for the third consecutive year and this season's eight-team extravaganza will be held again at Edmond Center Court. The Bronchos finished seventh in 2020 and third in 2021.
