Central Runs Past Riverhawks

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The UCO women's basketball team ran its win streak against longtime rival Northeastern State to a dozen after a 76-47 victory Saturday afternoon.
 
Central Oklahoma improved to 16-10 with the win and the Bronchos are now 12-8 in MIAA.
 
"We did a good job playing our game today," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We played our style and that's what we need to be focused on doing day in and day out. That worked for us today and the girls did a good job."

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 20 points and 11 rebounds. She shot 9 of 14 from the floor and hit 2 of 4 free-throws. Johnson also had two assists and one steal.
 
Alayzha Knapp also scored in double figures, posting 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting. She was 3 of 4 from the free-throw line. Aliyah Llanusa was Central's third double-digit scorer with 11 points. She was 4-for-8 from the floor and hit one 3-pointer and both of her free-throw attempts.


Central Oklahoma only trailed by two points on a few early occasions in the first quarter. UCO was down 2-0, 4-2 and 6-4, but when the Bronchos took a 7-6 lead on an Avery Allen 3-pointer with 4:51 to go in the first quarter, Central never trailed again.
 
UCO went on an 11-0 that started with Allen's three and finished the quarter on a 13-2 run to go ahead 17-8 at the first break.
 
The Bronchos outscored NSU 15-11 in the second quarter to take a 32-19 lead into halftime.
 
Central Oklahoma kept that lead through the third quarter, extending it by a point heading into the final frame before the Bronchos ran away with things in the fourth. UCO outscored Northeastern State 23-9 in the final 10 minutes, eventually leading by 29 points with a minute to go before settling on the final 74-46 victory.
 
Central Oklahoma shot 42 percent for the game, hitting 29 of 69 shots. The Bronchos shot 20 percent from behind the 3-point line, hitting just 3 of 15 from outside. UCO made 13 of 16 free-throws.
 
Allen scored six points and had four assists Saturday. She hit two 3-pointers and both were during the 11-0 run in the first quarter. Brooke Rayner also scored six points and had six rebounds and two steals. Jaci Littell also scored six points. She made one shot and all four of her free-throw attempts off the bench. She also had four assists and two steals.
 
Clary Donica and Taylor Dement both scored four points and Caley Young and Karly Wadsworth scored two each.
 
Central Oklahoma will wrap up the 2021-22 regular season next week at home. The Bronchos host Central Missouri Wednesday night before hosting Missouri Southern on Saturday.
 
UCO has qualified for the 2022 MIAA Basketball Championships, scheduled for March 2-6 in Kansas City, Mo. Central is currently tied for sixth place in the league standings with two games left.
