Central Oklahoma Downed By Jennies

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team made several rallies but couldn't get over the hump in a 79-66 loss to Central Missouri on Wednesday at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos are now 16-11 on the season heading into the final game of the 2021-22 regular season Saturday against Missouri Southern. UCO is 12-9 in the MIAA and remains tied for sixth place with Northwest Missouri.

A Broncho win in the season finale with a NWMSU loss would give UCO the No. 6 seed in next week's MIAA Basketball Championship. If both teams win or UCO loses, the Bronchos will be the No. 7 seed.

"We just didn't play well tonight," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We started really well and had the lead after the first quarter but we fouled too much and gave them too many opportunities."

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 25 points and 10 rebounds. She went 11-for-15 from the floor, with two of those misses coming on 3-point attempts. She was also 3-for-3 from the free-throw line.

Aliyah Llanusa added 11 points and three steals. Brooke Rayner scored nine and had two steals. Alayzha Knapp scored seven points to go with six rebounds. Avery Allen did not score but had eight assists.

UCO got 14 bench points on Wednesday night. Caley Young scored six points, Karly Wadsworth had three, Clary Donica and Taylor Dement each scored one point and Jaci Littell scored one.

Central Oklahoma shot 46.3 percent from the floor overall, but just 16.7 percent from behind the 3-point line. The Bronchos were 3-for-18 from deep. Rayner, Llanusa and Wadsworth each hit one 3-pointer. Central Oklahoma went 13-for-15 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma will play Missouri Southern Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the 2021-22 regular season finale. The Bronchos will then head to Kansas City, Missouri for the postseason tournament that opens March 2 at historic Municipal Auditorium.
