Kelsey Johnson, Central Oklahoma Have Record Night At Rogers State

CLAREMORE, Okla. – Kelsey Johnson added to one of her school records Wednesday and tied another in an 86-71 victory for the University of Central Oklahoma at Rogers State.

The grad student from Washington, Oklahoma scored 30 points. It's the seventh time Johnson has scored at least 30 points in one game. No other player in school history has done it more than twice. She also tied the school record for best single game field-goal percentage (92.7) by making 12 of 13 shots from the floor on Wednesday.

Wednesday was also Johnson's birthday.

"That's pretty cool for her do that on her birthday," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "She was great tonight and we needed it. We had some other girls play really well too. It was a good game for us. You like to see it when you're team plays well at this point in the season."

Central also set a new team record for a single game on Wednesday. The Bronchos made 68.1 percent of their shots from the floor. The previous record was 63.0 percent against Oklahoma Wesleyan in February 1987.

Brooke Rayner also scored 20 points in the win and Aliyah Llanusa added 10.

Johnson not only scored 30 points, but she did it by making 12 of 13 shots and 6 of 7 free-throws. She also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and added three assists, two blocks and one steal.

Rayner scored 20 on 7 of 10 shooting, including five 3-pointers and one free-throw. She also had four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Llanusa scored 10 on 3 of 4 shooting, hitting one 3-pointer and all three of her free-throw attempts. She had a couple of rebounds and one assist.

Central Oklahoma had a back and forth first quarter. The Bronchos jumped out to a 7-0 lead after Johnson scored her first two points and Llanusa scored the next five. Alayzha Knapp made a layup to make it 9-3 just three minutes into the action.

Rogers climbed back into it though and eventually took an 18-17 lead with 52 seconds left in the first quarter. The Hillcats closed the opening frame on a 7-0 run of their own to take a 21-17 lead at the first break.

That carried over into the second quarter, with RSU opening with a 6-2 run to go ahead 27-19 with 8:28 left in the first half. But then it was the Bronchos who responded, going on a 9-0 run over the next 94 seconds to go back in front 28-27.

The teams leveled out and went into halftime tied, 38-38.

Central Oklahoma created some separation in the third quarter. Johnson made a layup with 6:45 to play in the third quarter, was fouled in the act, and then knocked down the free-throw to give the Bronchos a 45-44 lead.

Central never trailed again.

The Bronchos made 10 of 12 shots in the third quarter, a blistering 83.3 percent, and pulled ahead 63-55 heading into the final frame.

UCO outscored Rogers State in the final 10 minutes too, hitting 8 of 12 shots to take the victory.
