Bronchos Run By Jets

WICHITA, Kan. – The UCO women's basketball team spent most of Saturday afternoon with a lead before beating Newman 77-62 in MIAA play.
 
Central Oklahoma is now 14-10 on the season and has a 10-8 record in the MIAA.
 
"They fought us pretty hard early and made it kind of tough but the girls did a good job of staying with our gameplan and it worked out for us today," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said.
 
UCO took a lead in the second quarter and never looked back Saturday. The lead was just five at halftime but the Bronchos pulled away late for the double-digit win.
 
Kelsey Johnson led a balanced attack for UCO with 16 points in the game. Brooke Rayner scored 15 points and Aliyah Llanusa scored 11. Caley Young scored nine off the bench, and Alayzha Knapp, who scored eight, had a team-high six rebounds.
 
Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead, going up 7-3 within the first two minutes. Newman made a run to get back in front and led by one point with three minutes left before the end of the quarter, but the Bronchos responded to pull ahead 23-18 at the end of the first quarter.
 
Newman opened the second half on a 12-5 run to take a 30-28 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. Johnson tied the game at 30 with a jumper and Newman went back in front with one free-throw. Then Rayner hit one of her 3-pointers to give Central a 33-31 lead. She hit another one to break a 33-33 tie, giving UCO a 36-33 lead with three minutes left in the half. Central never trailed again.
 
UCO took a 44-39 lead into the half.
 
Central Oklahoma stalled a bit in the third quarter but still outscored Newman 13-9 to stretch a five-point lead to nine, 57-48. UCO put up 20 more in the fourth quarter to close out the win.
 
Central Oklahoma got 24 bench points Saturday afternoon, led by Young's nine. She was 3-for-5 from the floor, hit one 3-pointer, and made both of her free-throw attempts.
 
Karly Wadsworth scored six points, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Clary Donica scored five and Taylor Dement added four points.
 
Johnson scored 16 on 4 of 5 shooting. She went 8-for-8 from the free-throw line and also had a pair of rebounds in the game. Rayner scored 15 points on 6 of 8 shooting. She hit three 3-pointers and had three rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
 
Llanusa scored 11 points on 3 of 10 shooting. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and three free-throws. Llanusa also had six assists and three rebounds to go with one steal. Knapp scored eight points on 4 of 5 shooting and had six boards and one steal. Jaci Littell also scored three points, hitting one 3-pointer.
 
Central Oklahoma has two games left on a three-game road swing. UCO is scheduled to visit Rogers State on Wednesday next week before visiting Northeastern State next Saturday.
 
UCO closes the 2021-22 regular season at home in two weeks, hosting Central Missouri Feb. 23 and Missouri Southern Feb. 26.
