Bronchos Fall in New Year's Eve Battle With Washburn

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma couldn't find an open shot on the final possession of 2022 and dropped a New Year's Eve MIAA contest with Washburn, 75-73, at Hamilton Field House.

UCO fell to 4-7 overall on the season with the loss and the Bronchos are now 1-6 in MIAA play.

"We had our chances and couldn't get it done," UCO head women's basketball coach Emma Andrews said. "There are a lot of little things you can look at and wish were different, but we still had the ball with a chance to tie or win it and we didn't get it done."

Neither team made a field goal in the final 98 seconds of the game and Washburn made only four in the entire fourth quarter is it relied on trip after trip to the free-throw line.

Brooke Rayner made two free-throws with 31 seconds left to pull the Bronchos within a point, 73-72. She fouled immediately on the inbound and Washburn missed both of its free-throw attempts, giving UCO chance to take the lead on the game's final possession.

However, Alayzha Knapp was called for her fifth foul trying to post up a Washburn defender. And, an untimely technical foul was assessed to Andrews for her reaction to the call. While Washburn missed the first of two free-throws, UCO had to foul again.

This time, Washburn missed both free-throws and Caley Young was fouled on the rebound, putting the third-year sophomore at the free-throw line with 19 seconds to play down by two.

Young made the first but missed the second. The Bronchos tried to play solid defense before fouling and eventually did with nine seconds left. Washburn missed the first but made the second to go ahead, 75-73.

Rayner pushed the ball ahead and found Karly Wadsworth in the corner, but the Bronchos had to throw up an awkward look at a 3-pointer that never had a chance and Washburn snuck away with a victory.

Despite Washburn missing six in the final 30 seconds, the visiting Ichabods went 24 of 35 from the free-throw line in the game. Macy Doebele went 1 of 2 from the floor and finished with a career-high 19 points thanks to a 17-for-20 night at the free-throw line.

UCO went 13-for-15 from the line on Saturday.

Rayner led the Bronchos with 19 points and filled up the stat sheet. She added four rebounds, three steals and three blocks, and also had two assists. Rayner went 7-for-14 overall, 3-for-7 from behind the 3-point line and made both of her free-throw attempts.

Knapp scored 15 points with a team-high seven rebounds before fouling out. She also had three steals and was 7-for-7 from the line.

Wadsworth scored 13 points and also made three 3-pointers.

Aliyah Llanusa, who scored seven points, added six rebounds, six assists and also had three steals. Young finished with nine points off the bench and added four rebounds. Aspen Williston scored eight points and had five boards and three blocked shots. Both Young and Williston fouled out for the Bronchos along with Knapp.

Lexi Foreman also scored two points to round out the scoring for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma built an early lead in the game before trailing 20-19 after one quarter of play. Washburn had its biggest lead of the game in the second quarter, 31-24, but UCO finished the second quarter with a flurry and led 39-34 at halftime.

UCO still had a small lead going into the fourth quarter, 56-54, before Washburn pulled away late. UCO's final lead came with 2:49 to play, 68-66, when Wadsworth stripped away her only steal of the game and scored her final basket of the game.

The Bronchos wrap up a short homestand Monday night with another MIAA contest. UCO hosts Emporia State with tipoff scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
