No. 9 Central Oklahoma Pounds Washburn

EDMOND – No. 9 Central Oklahoma used a suffocating defensive performance in the first half to spark a 72-57 MIAA victory over Washburn in a New Year's Eve contest at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma improved to 12-1 overall with the win and the Bronchos are now 6-1 in MIAA play.

"Our defense was great today, but especially in the first half, and that was big for us," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "We had a lot of guys play well on offense and everyone played really good and together on the defensive side and that was great."

Washburn had a 10-8 lead with 15:59 to play in the first half. What ensued was a complete domination by the Bronchos. UCO went on a 32-5 run over the next 14 minutes.

Preston Aymond hit a 3-pointer to give UCO an 11-10 lead and the Bronchos never trailed again. When Luke Haasl scored a layup with 1:55 to play, UCO led 40-15.

UCO forced nine turnovers during the monster run and held Washburn to 2 of 15 shooting.

Aymond scored a career-high 17 points on Saturday evening. He went 7-for-12 from the floor, hit three 3-pointers, and added five rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Jaden Wells led all scorers with 18 points in the game and all of them came from 3-pointers. The sharpshooting sophomore hit 6 of 10 from behind the 3-point line and also had five rebounds and five assists in the game.

Curtis Haywood also scored in double figures with 13 points on 4 of 8 shooting. He hit three 3-pointers and a pair of free-throws. Haywood also gathered four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

UCO also got seven points, six assists and three steals from Danquez Dawsey and six points and 11 rebounds from Camryn Givens.

Jalyn Turner (seven points, three rebounds) and Luke Haasl (four points, four boards and two blocks) gave UCO a solid effort off the bench.

UCO ran its win streak to five games Saturday. To get to sixth, the Bronchos will face a tough test. Central Oklahoma hosts No. 20 Emporia State Monday at 7:30 p.m. in a crucial meeting of two nationally-ranked MIAA squads at Hamilton Field House.
