Bronchos Finish Off Dominant Opening Week

EDMOND – No. 11 Central Oklahoma got off to a hot start Thursday night at Hamilton Field House before running away with a rousing 116-52 victory over Kansas Christian.
 
The Bronchos improved to 3-0 on the season with the win. Central Oklahoma won three games in five days this week, scoring an average of 108.7 points per game. The margins of victory for the Bronchos were 38, 59, and 64.
 
Jaden Wells scored 30 on Thursday night, with every point coming by way of the 3-pointer. The third-year sophomore guard from Texas hit a new career-high 10 threes in the game, which is tied for the second-most in school history.
 
Wells went 10-for-15 from the field and also had five rebounds and two steals in the game.
 
Central Oklahoma as a team went 15-for-37 from behind the arc. The Bronchos shot 50.6 percent overall (41-for-81), 40.5 percent from three, and UCO went 19-for-21 from the free-throw line, a 90.5 percent rate.
 
Camryn Givens added 15 points and five rebounds, going 6-for-7 from the floor. The fifth-year senior made a 3-pointer to give UCO a 3-0 lead in the game and the Bronchos never looked back. Givens, who also had four steals, ended the night 3-for-3 from deep.
 
Callen Haydon posted the game's only double-double. The fifth-year senior point guard posted 13 points and 10 assists. He had zero points and eight assists midway through the first half. Haydon went 5-for-5 from the free-throw line and had three steals.
 
UCO as a team finished with 22 steals in the game, just a bit off the school record of 24.
 
Mike Quick Jr. scored 13 points to lead the bench effort for the Bronchos. UCO got 48 points from the bench. Luke Haasl added 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
Givens 3-pointer to start the game started a 9-0 run by the Bronchos over the first 90 seconds of the game. Wells hit his first 3-pointer and Givens hit another. Kansas Christian finally got on the board, but after Haasl's dropped in a hook shot layup, Central Oklahoma led 18-4 at the first media timeout with 14:17 to play in the first half.
 
UCO led by 26 points, 37-11, before the second media timeout at 8:48 to play.
 
Wells hit his seventh 3-pointer of the first half to give UCO a 37-point lead, 52-15, with 5:25 to play till halftime.
 
Ben Averitt scored with 12 seconds left in the first half to give the Bronchos a 46-point lead at the break, 65-19.
 
Central Oklahoma put it on cruise control in the second half, playing all 13 squad members down the stretch. All 13 scored too for the Bronchos.
 
Curtis Haywood and Jalyn Turner both scored eight points, Averitt finished with six, and Danquez Dawsey scored four points. Tre'Veon Ellis added three points, and Preston Aymond, Austin Fenton, and Gunner Korstjens all scored two.
