UCO Falls Short In MIAA Tournament Thriller

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (Nov. 10) – No. 21-ranked Central Oklahoma put up a valiant fight but came up short in dropping a thrilling five-set decision to No. 20 Washburn in the first round of the MIAA Volleyball Championship Thursday at Civic Arena.

The Bronchos claimed a 25-20 win in the opening set before losing 25-22, 25-23 in the next two. UCO used a late surge to pull out a 25-20 win to extend the match before the Ichabods prevailed 17-15 in a tense fifth-set slugfest.

Central dropped to 24-7 on the season and will find out Sunday if that's enough to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Division II national tournament. WU improved to 22-7 in moving into Friday's semifinals against regular-season champion Northwest Missouri.

"It was a tough, hard-fought match and we came up a little short," head coach Edgar Miraku said. "We left everything on the court and had our chances, but Washburn just made a few more plays than we did.

"This team has battled all season long and I'm really proud of the way they fought tonight. We've got a young group that's made a lot of progress this year and I'm excited about our future."

The Bronchos -- featuring three freshmen and three sophomore starters -- had beaten Washburn twice during the regular season and got off to a great start Thursday in taking the first set.

UCO led 8-6 after consecutive Maegan Lacy kills before the Ichabods went up 10-9 and the lead went back-and-forth for several points before the Bronchos finally took control.

Jenna Karp knocked down three kills and Katie Le had an ace in a 5-0 run that gave Central a 22-17 lead. WU got within 23-20, but Mallorie Koehn and Lari Migliorino teamed up for a block and Lindsey Houran ended the set with a kill.

Washburn broke away from a 10-all deadlock in the second set to open up a 19-14 lead and was up 24-19 when the Bronchos made things interesting. Lacy had a kill, then Karp drilled two straight to make it 24-22, but the Ichabods got the final point to even the match.

UCO had another late rally fall short in the third set. It was close most of the way before WU used a 5-1 run to break a 17-17 tie and go ahead 22-18.

It was 24-20 when Karp again delivered, coming up with consecutive kills to make it 24-22 and force a Washburn timeout. An attack error pulled UCO within 24-23, but again the Ichabods closed it out.

The fourth set was another dogfight that saw the Bronchos rally one more time, though this one ended up in victory.

UCO led 14-11 only to see the Ichabods charge back in front 18-17. But it was all Central after that.

Sydney Huck started a set-ending 8-2 run with a kill, then followed a Washburn error with another. Karp continued the onslaught with an ace, Migliorino hit one down the line and another miscue had the Bronchos on top 23-18.

Huck scored between WU points to make it 24-20 before the freshman standout capped the big closing burst with her eighth kill of the set.

The final set was like the first four as the teams traded blows.

UCO led 7-5 only to commit three attack errors in falling behind 10-7. The Bronchos responded with two Karp kills and another by Huck to tie it at 10 and Huck had three more kills as the teams were deadlocked again at 11, 12, 13 and 14.

The last tie came at 15-all after an Egger kill, but Washburn scored the final two points to end the long battle that left both teams exhausted.

Karp and Huck had 20 kills apiece to lead UCO, with Huck adding 22 digs. Migliorino added 12 kills and four blocks.

National digs leader Jaedynn Evans was sensational defensively with a career-high 41 digs, which ranks seventh on UCO's single-match list. Houran had a career-best 61 assists along with 12 digs, while Josie Thomas added 12 digs and Le 11.
