The Cup Stays In Edmond

Central Oklahoma Beat Northeastern State 55-6 To Retain President's Cup For One More Year

EDMOND – Central Oklahoma thrashed Northeastern State for the eighth straight time, continuing the punishing tradition the Bronchos have made the norm over the past 2,896 days.

Central Oklahoma 55, Northeastern State 6.

"The guys did a great job of coming out with a lot of energy and that start gave us a lot of momentum," UCO head football coach Adam Dorrel said. "It was a great start and that helped set the tone. It's also good to be able to play as many guys as we have the last couple of weeks."

UCO forced a three & out on the opening possession by NSU, and the 4th & 24 punt was returned by Diego Richards to the Northeastern 10-yard line, setting up a simple 2-play, 10-yard scoring drive to open the game.

The Bronchos led 7-0 two minutes and 34 seconds into the game after Stephon Brown trotted into the end zone.

Northeastern got one first down on the next drive but the suffocating UCO defense forced another punt after a 6-play, 15-yard drive. Then, after the first three plays netted the Bronchos 19 yards, Brown darted around the defense for a 65-yard rushing touchdown to make it 14-0.

That UCO defense followed that with a score of its own. On 2nd & 10 from the NSU 25, Blake Barron forced a fumble that popped up in the air and into Jason Harris' hands. Harris returned it 35 yards for another score. UCO led 21-0 after 9:14 of game time.

UCO added one more score in the first quarter, with Nicky Quevedo nailing a 41-yard field goal to give Central the 24-0 lead.

Central Oklahoma got the ball with 14:49 to play in the second quarter and the Bronchos kept their foot on the gas. An 8-play, 75-yard scoring drive followed. Andrew Carney, a true freshman playing fullback for the Bronchos, followed a 39-yard reception with a 25-yard touchdown catch to make it 31-0, UCO.

The Bronchos forced a three & out after that, holding NSU to -4 yards on three plays, but a fumble on the punt return gave the guests another chance. But UCO held NSU to -24 yards on the next three plays and proceeded to execute yet another scoring drive.

Six plays and 61 yards later, Central Oklahoma went ahead 38-0 when Brown connected with Jacob Delso for a 3-yard touchdown pass.

Another three & out, another Broncho touchdown.

Brown hit Delso again, this time on a 20-yard connection, and the Bronchos went ahead 45-0 with 3:43 to play in the second quarter.

Another three & out, and yes, another Broncho score.

Payton Scott got in on the action this time and charged through almost every NSU defender for a 49-yard touchdown run to give the Bronchos a 52-0 lead.

Central Oklahoma's 52 first-half points are the most points in a half since 2017, when the Bronchos put up the same amount on NSU in Tahlequah.

UCO played a much different game in the second half. The Bronchos ran the ball 26 times to only four passes in the second half as Dorrel played nearly the entire roster.

A 42-yard field goal by Quevedo with 6:40 in the third quarter made it 55-0.

Northeastern got its lone score on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 1:21 left in the game.

Central Oklahoma finished with 476 yards of total offense. The Bronchos ran the ball 42 times for 286 yards and passed 17-for-23 with 190 yards. UCO had three touchdowns both passing and rushing.

Brown went 13-for-18 with 166 yards and three scores. He also ran the ball three times for 75 yards and two scores. Peyton Thompson, who had three carries for 30 yards, added 4-for-5 passing for 24 yards.

Terrill Davis and Delso both had three receptions to lead a group of nine that made a catch on Thursday night. Davis had 59 yards and Delso had 20 with the two scores.

Carney added a team-high 64 yards on two catches with one touchdown.

Jayce Gardner carried the ball a team-high 21 times for 82 yards, including a long of 34. Scott finished with 54 yards and Nasir Kemper had three rushes for 29 yards.

Defensively, Central was led by true freshman Chase Faber, who made seven tackles. Jamori Ray added four stops and forced one fumble, which Stephon Tolon recovered.

Noah West, who made two tackles, had 1.5 sacks and an interception. Aaron Hamilton had three tackles and an interception. Harris finished with three tackles to go with his scoop and score. Robert Fuentes, who made four tackles, joined West on one of those sacks.

Central Oklahoma plays back-to-back home games once this season and Thursday night was the front end of that. The Bronchos will get a nine-day prep period before hosting Fort Hays State on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Chad Richison Stadium. Fort Hays, which is 1-4 this season, hosts Washburn (3-2) Saturday night in Hays, Kan.
