UCO Routs Rogers State

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball won its third consecutive game Saturday afternoon, blowing out Rogers State 86-72 at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma improved to 10-5 overall with the win and the Bronchos are now 6-3 in the MIAA.

"We played great defense today and that's what did it for us," UCO assistant women's basketball coach Heather Davis said after the game. "We forced a lot of turnovers, got a lot of steals. That kind of effort was big for us and led to a lot of offense."

Central Oklahoma forced 33 turnovers Saturday, a season-high, and the Bronchos nabbed 20 steals as part of that. Rogers State shot 51.9 percent from the field and made as many free-throws (12) as the Bronchos, but a wild 41-16 advantage in points off turnovers by UCO proved too much for the Hillcats.

Central's Aliyah Llanusa, who added four points, also had a career-high six steals in the game, leading the defensive effort for the Bronchos.

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 24 points and also had a team-high seven rebounds. She was 11-for-15 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Johnson also had three assists, one steal, and one blocked shot.

Brooke Rayner also scored 20 points Saturday, a season high for the junior guard. She was 8-for-12 from the field, including 4-for-7 from behind the 3-point line. Rayner added three steals, two assists and one rebound.

UCO, which led by as many as 28 points in the third quarter, did have to fight for it early.

Central led 4-0 after one minute of play and was up 12-10 after five minutes of play before a 6-0 Rogers State run gave the Hillcats their first and only lead of the game. RSU led 19-14 with 1:53 to play in the opening quarter after a 3-pointer, but Central closed the opening frame on a 7-0 run thanks to a Jaci Littell layup, a Rayner 3-pointer, and another layup from Rayner as time expired. UCO led 21-19 at the first break.

Central then blew it wide open. The Bronchos outscored Rogers State 26-9 in the second quarter, allowing just four baskets from the opposition. UCO led 47-28 at halftime and never looked back.

UCO outscored Rogers again in the third quarter, 26-19, and built a 28-point lead on a Rayner layup with 14 seconds to go in the frame. That made it 73-45.

Rogers State did outscore the Bronchos in the fourth quarter to cut the lead down to its eventual 14-point Central victory.

Littell finished with five points on a 2-for-2 night from the field. She hit the only 3-pointer she attempted. Alayzha Knapp added eight points and four rebounds. She went 3-for-4 from the floor Saturday. Avery Allen, two points and four assists, rounded out the scoring for Central's starting five.

UCO had 43 bench points Saturday, led by Rayner's 20.

Taylor Dement scored nine and had three assists and two steals. Clary Donica scored six to go with five rebounds. Karly Wadsworth added four points and three steals. And Caley Young and Rory Geer both scored two.

Eleven Bronchos scored Saturday afternoon. Nine Bronchos had a steal.

Central Oklahoma will hit the road next week as MIAA play rolls along. The Bronchos are scheduled to play at Central Missouri Thursday night before facing Lincoln on Saturday afternoon.
