Central Oklahoma Nips Newman

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team opened the new year with a double-digit victory over Newman Monday night in an MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma 66, Newman 52.

There were no lead changes. The game was never tied. And although Central didn't play great, the night ended with a victory.

"We weren't very sharp," UCO assistant women's basketball coach Heather Davis said. "But that's to be expected after the break. It's always a challenge to comeback and be playing at a high level. All that matters is we got the win and we'll try to get two more later this week."

Central Oklahoma shot 41.3 percent from the floor Monday night. The Bronchos hit just 4 of 19 3-point attempts but went a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 30 points. She was 12-for-19 overall and posted six of UCO's 10 makes from the free-throw line. She added eight rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Johnson has scored at least 30 more than any other player in school history. After posting three 30-point games last season, Johnson recorded her second of this season Monday night. She also moved up to No. 7 on Central Oklahoma's all-time scoring list. Johnson has scored 1,086 career points to date.

UCO had two starters not score Monday, but a 25-point outburst from the bench helped.

Aliyah Llanusa scored eight and Karly Wadsworth added three points while Brooke Rayner and Alayzha Knapp went scoreless. Knapp did add four assists, three rebounds, two steals and a block. Rayner added to her team lead in the steals category with one.

Caley Young led the bench effort, scoring six points to go with a game-high and a new season-high 10 rebounds. Young was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor and grabbed four offensive boards to go with six more on the defensive end. She also had two assists and two steals.

Avery Allen scored five off the bench, hitting one 3-pointer. She added two assists and a steal. Clary Donica and Taylor Dement both had four points. While Jaci Littell, Ginger Reece, and Rory Geer all scored two points.

Central Oklahoma struck first and it was all Johnson early. The senior forward scored a layup 11 seconds into the game and was fouled in the act. She hit her first free-throw of the night and UCO led 3-0. The Bronchos never looked back. Neither did Johnson.

She scored again on a layup a couple possessions later, with an assist from Knapp, and it was 5-0, UCO. She made it 7-2 with a layup with 7:19 to play in the opening quarter, then 9-5 with a layup with 5:58 to play in the opening quarter.

Johnson scored nine points in the opening quarter and Central Oklahoma led 20-10.

The teams were square in the second quarter as Newman put forth its best effort. After a 22-22 frame, the Bronchos held on to that 10-point lead all the way to halftime.

UCO then struggled in the third quarter, getting outscored by the Jets 12-8. Central Oklahoma was just 3-for-14 in the frame, including an 0-for-6 mark from behind the 3-point line.

But the Bronchos did finish strong, outscoring Newman 16-8 in the final stanza to take the victory.

Central Oklahoma is now 8-5 overall this season following Monday's win. The Bronchos are 4-3 in MIAA competition. UCO will play two more league matchups at home this weekend, taking on longtime rival Northeastern State on Thursday before hosting in-state foe Rogers State Saturday afternoon.
