Bronchos Win At Emporia

EMPORIA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team beat Emporia State 74-71 Thursday in an MIAA matchup at White Auditorium.

It's the first win for the Bronchos at Emporia since the early 1990s.

"The girls did a great job on defense of making them take tough shots," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "And a lot of times, they're still going to make those. They're a really good team but we did a great job of getting them out of rhythm tonight."

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Taylor Dement scored 15 and Caley Young added 10, both off the bench. Central outscored Emporia 37-12 in bench points.

Central Oklahoma controlled most of the first quarter. After Emporia scored first, a 3-pointer by Brooke Rayner gave Central a lead it hung on to for nearly all of the first frame. ESU took a late lead and was ahead 17-16 at the first break.

But UCO, which scored the last two points of the first quarter, scored the first nine points of the second quarter. The 11-0 run gave Central a 25-17 lead and kept Emporia cold for the first five minutes of the second quarter.

Young scored the first two baskets and then assisted on the next one to Johnson. Avery Allen followed with a 3-pointer to cap off the 11-0 run.

UCO outscored Emporia 24-19 in the second quarter and took a 40-36 lead to halftime.

Central held steady in the third quarter. The Bronchos led by four at halftime and Emporia made a run, but the Bronchos had an answer every time. UCO led 63-52 heading to the fourth quarter, thanks in part to a 9-for-9 line from the free-throw line during the quarter.

Central did the same in the fourth quarter, holding strong to a double-digit lead for most of the final frame. Leading 74-63 with 1:06 to play, UCO did allow an 8-0 run to end the game by the Lady Hornets, but the Bronchos held on in the end and got the first win in Emporia for Hardaker.

Johnson scored 20 points on 8 of 12 shooting. She was also 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Dement had 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting, including 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Young scored 10 points on 5-for-5 shooting and she also had three rebounds.

Allen finished with eight points and eight assists. She had seven assists in the first half. Clary Donica added six points as part of the big bench performance for the Bronchos. Rayner scored five, Alayzha Knapp had four, and Jaci Littell and Ginger Reece each scored three points.

Central Oklahoma will continue a week away from home with a trip to Topeka, Kansas on Saturday. The Bronchos face Washburn at 1 p.m. from Lee Arena. UCO is home again in February to take on Nebraska Kearney and Fort Hays State next week.
