UCO Falls In Overtime At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped an exciting overtime battle with Washburn Saturday afternoon, falling 98-93 in the MIAA matchup at Lee Arena.

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 23 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists. Brooke Rayner added 18 points and six steals. Avery Allen (13) and Alayzha Knapp (12) also scored in double figures for UCO.

"We didn't play good on defense today," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We forced a lot of turnovers, got a lot of steals, but they got too many easy baskets. We didn't do a good job there and we put them on the line way too much. I think we played well, I'll take 93 points, but we got to do a better job all around."

Central Oklahoma is now 12-9 overall this season and 8-7 in the MIAA. The Bronchos play at home next week, hosting Nebraska Kearney on Thursday night at Hamilton Field House before welcoming Fort Hays State to Hamilton next Saturday afternoon.

Central got off to a sluggish start. The Bronchos did hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter but only 6 of 14 total field goals and UCO didn't get to the free-throw line at all. The Bronchos trailed 23-15 after the first 10 minutes.

After the first 15 minutes, it didn't look like much was going to change from the first quarter. Central trailed 33-17 with 5:25 to play and the Bronchos were missing shots and turning the ball over. Then it all changed.

Central went 7-for-11 during the final 5:25 of the first half and hit all six free-throw attempts. The Bronchos also forced five turnovers and Johnson scored 10 of her 12 first-half points during the run. UCO orchestrated a 20-7 run to end the first half, cutting the lead to one at one point and taking only a two-point deficit to halftime, 39-37.

Central Oklahoma finally took a lead in the third quarter when Allen knocked down a big 3-pointer from the right wing to make it 51-50. The teams then exchanged the lead for the first time in the game and did so several times after that in the quarter. UCO managed to tie the game, 63-63, heading to the fourth quarter.

The Bronchos built as much as a three-point lead twice in the fourth quarter but the team's kept fighting, back and forth and tied and back and forth again. And then tied again.

Rayner knocked down a jump shot from the baseline with 3.8 seconds left to give UCO an 86-84 lead. But Washburn, following a timeout, went right to the basket and scored a layup with 0.2 seconds to play to tie the game and force the extra period.

UCO led early in overtime, going up 88-86 early, but Washburn scored the next four to go back in front. After Caley Young hit a big jumper from the free-throw line to tie the game, 90-90, Washburn scored the next five to put it away before settling on the final 98-93 score.

Johnson finished with 23 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists. She was 9-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Her fifth made free-throw Saturday was the 100th make from the stripe on the year for the grad student from Washington, Oklahoma.

Rayner scored 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and led the defensive effort tying her career high with six steals.

Knapp had 12 points and shot 5 of 15 from the floor. Allen scored a season-high 13 points to go with three assists and three rebounds. She also made three 3-pointers.

Ginger Reece added seven points and Jaci Littell scored five. Aliyah Llanusa also scored five points and had three steals. Taylor Dement scored six points and had two steals herself. Young scored two points as did Clary Donica.

The Bronchos play at home next week, hosting Nebraska Kearney on Thursday night at Hamilton Field House before welcoming Fort Hays State to Hamilton next Saturday afternoon.
