Bronchos Plaster Western Colorado

KEARNEY, Neb. (Jan. 22) – Shawn Streck made his Central Oklahoma debut a short one with a 54-second fall at heavyweight to cap off a 40-9 trouncing of Western Colorado in the opening match of the Midwest Duals Saturday morning.

The top-ranked Bronchos earned bonus points in all eight of their wins, highlighted by falls from Streck, 174 Kalin Winkler and 197 Dalton Abney. UCO also got technical falls from 133 Tanner Cole and 141 Nate Keim, while 125 Paxton Rosen, 157 Ty Lucas and 184 Heath Gray had major decisions.

Central, competing for the first time in two weeks, improved to 8-0 with its 14th straight win. The Bronchos return at 11 a.m. to face No. 14 Adams State in the final dual of the day.

"We looked pretty good for haven't not been on the mat much the last couple of weeks," said head coach Todd Steidley, whose team was forced to cancel last week's home dual with McKendree for health and safety reasons. "Our guys went out aggressive and were looking to score."

Streck, a mid-semester addition for the Bronchos who was Division I national qualifier at Purdue in 2018, wasted little time in the final match of the morning. The junior big man struck for three quick takedowns before ending it in just 54 seconds.

Abney didn't take long either, scoring a takedown in the opening seconds and then getting the fall at 1:36. It was the seven pin of the season for the top-ranked Abney, including the sixth in the first period.

Winkler trailed 4-2 early in the second period of his bout, but got a reverse and four-point near-fall to take an 8-4 lead before turning a third-period takedown into a fall at the 6:29 mark.

The top-ranked Cole had four takedowns and two near-falls in 17-2 rout that ended midway through the second period. Keim had one of the most impressive performances of the dual as the fourth-ranked junior blitzed No. 10 Dean Noble 16-0 early in the second stanza with three near-falls and two takedowns.

Third-ranked Lucas had four takedowns and a near-fall in a 13-5 romp, the sixth-rated Rosen collected four takedowns and a near-fall in an easy 12-2 win and No. 1 Gray tallied five takedowns in a 12-2 triumph.
