Kelsey Johnson Scores Career High, But Central Comes Up Short

Senior Forward Scored 38 Points, The Second-Most In School History

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team lost 93-88 to Missouri Western Saturday afternoon in an MIAA matchup at Hamilton Field House.

Central Oklahoma is now 11-8 on the season following the setback. The Bronchos are 7-6 in the MIAA.

"We just did not do a good job of defending today," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We forced a lot of turnovers and got a lot of steals, but I don't think we played very good on defense. They got too many easy baskets."

Kelsey Johnson led Central on Saturday, continuing her impressive season/career with more history.

Johnson scored 38 points for the Bronchos. That's the second most by any player in one game in school history.

"I am happy for her," Hardaker said. "It stinks when you lose the game but have something special like that happen because you don't get to enjoy as much. Kelsey would rather win that score all the points that she does. But I'm happy for her. Great kid that deserves it so much. She's special and it's been great having on our team."

Johnson walked into the building with more 30-point games than any player to ever wear a Central Oklahoma uniform. She hit that mark three times last season and had three more of them before Saturday. But her career high was 32. She topped that on this day.

Johnson scored 38 points on 16 of 23 shooting. She made both of her 3-point attempts from the top of the key and was 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Johnson also had nine rebounds, one steal, and one blocked shot. She did it all in 27 minutes in 43 seconds of game time.

Aliyah Llanusa had a huge game for Central too. She scored 18 points to go with six rebounds and six steals. She was aggressive on both ends of the floor, forcing turnovers on a consistent basis and finding her way to the free-throw line for a dozen attempts. She made 8 of 12 from the stripe.

Brooke Rayner also scored 18 points, hitting 7 of 21 shots and two 3-pointers. Rayner had seven rebounds and five assists.

Caley Young scored eight points to go with seven rebounds – a solid performance by the second-year freshman. And Alayzha Knapp had six points and three assists to go with two rebounds. But, that was all 88 of Central's points. Six Bronchos played in the game and didn't score.

UCO got outscored 39-6 in bench points.

Central Oklahoma is scheduled to hit the road for a pair of league games next week. The Bronchos are lined up to face Emporia State on Wednesday and Washburn on Saturday. UCO's next home game is scheduled for Feb. 3 against Nebraska Kearney.
