UCO Stalls Out In Battle With Bearcats

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team overcame a sluggish start Thursday night to take a lead into the fourth quarter of its MIAA game against Northwest Missouri, but the Bronchos ended how they started and lost 79-69.

"We have not been able to shoot the ball well all season and I think that's what got us tonight," UCO head women's basketball coach Guy Hardaker said. "We couldn't get a rebound and that hurt us and we couldn't hit a shot. Just not a great night."

Central Oklahoma (11-7, 7-5 MIAA) shot 40.4 percent from the field Thursday. The Bronchos made only 1 of 10 shots from behind the 3-point line. UCO did well to produce a 22-for-28 record at the free-throw line.

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with 30 points on 12 of 19 shooting. She missed both of her 3-point attempts but was also 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Thursday was the sixth time Johnson has scored 30 points. That's a school record. She now has 1,205 points in her career with the Bronchos, moving up to fifth on the all-time scoring list with Thursday night's performance.

Alayzha Knapp added 13 points on 4 of 12 shooting. She was 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Brooke Rayner scored seven points and had four steals, three rebounds and three assists. Caley Young also had seven points and three rebounds.

Aliyah Llanusa, who hit UCO's only 3-pointer in the game, had five points and three rebounds and one steal.

Jaci Littell added four points and Taylor Dement scored three.

Central Oklahoma got off to a rough start Thursday. The Bronchos went 4-for-15 from the floor in the first quarter and UCO found itself in a 19-11 deficit after one quarter of play.

The Bronchos battle back early in the second quarter. When Johnson knocked down a jump shot with four and a half minutes to play till halftime, the deficit was only one point, 22-21. UCO then had two wide open looks at a 3-pointer that could have given the Bronchos the lead, but UCO missed on both and Northwest followed with a 10-2 run to close the half.

Central finally got some things going in the third quarter, outscoring Northwest 27-17. The Bronchos went 7-for-12 from the floor and made 13 of 16 shots from the free-throw line.

After three, it was Central 50, Northwest 49.

But Northwest opened the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run and things soon got out of hand for the Bronchos.

Knapp was whistled for a technical foul and Hardaker received two technicals after that as Northwest pulled away for the victory. UCO was outscored 30-19 in the final frame.

Central Oklahoma is back in action this weekend. The Bronchos are scheduled to host Missouri Western on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
