UCO Season Ends In MIAA Tourney

JOPLIN, Mo. - Central Oklahoma lost 2-1 to Pittsburg State Friday night in the MIAA Baseball Championship Consolation Final.

The setback ended Central's season. UCO finished the 2021 campaign 25-21.

"Hats off to their guy for throwing a complete game and a good one," UCO head baseball coach John Martin said. "We couldn't find the offense tonight and that's a tough way to end it.

"I want to say thanks to our guys who finished their careers tonight," Martin continued. "I want to thank them for everything they did for this program."

Central Oklahoma managed three hits Friday night. Bennett Laurance had two of them and Garrett Takamatsu added another.

UCO took a 1-0 lead midway through Friday night's matchup. Zac Freeman drew a one-out walk in the top of the fifth and moved quickly to third on a Laurence single to left. Ryan Harrel then scored Freeman with a sacrifice fly to right field to give UCO a 1-0 lead in the game.

Pittsburg State responded though, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.

Brayden Nelson got the start for the Bronchos Friday night, with the senior right-hander from Piedmont, Oklahoma going five innings and allowing the two earned runs. Nelson allowed five hits in five innings and struck out five batters.

Blake Bautz came on in relief for Nelson to start the bottom of the sixth and the junior lefty threw 2/3 of an inning allowing just one hit. Lawson Isaacs then came in to relieve Bautz and struck out the first batter he saw to get UCO out of the sixth still within a run, 2-1.

Isaacs got one more out in the seventh before being pulled after allowing a single up the middle. Kyler Patterson followed Isaacs out of the bullpen and provided a boost. He picked off the runner at first that singled off Isaacs and then struck out the PSU batter at the plate to get UCO out of the seventh.

Patterson threw one inning Friday, finishing off the seventh and getting one out in the bottom of the eighth. He also allowed one hit, a single up the middle, and struck out two batters.

Beaux Bonvillain finished off the bottom of the eighth with two strikeouts to give UCO its final chance in the ninth still down just 2-1.

Kyle Crowl was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth and Takamatsu followed with his one hit, a single into center field. But UCO struck out in its next two at bats and Freeman popped out to left field to end the game.
