Bronchos Advance To National Semifinals

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's tennis team advanced to the NCAA Division II National Championship Semifinals with a 4-0 win over Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday.
 
Central Oklahoma, now 21-1 on the season and winners of 19 in a row, will play Barry Thursday at 11 a.m. (CST). UCO is ranked No. 3 in the country and is the third seed in the national tournament. Barry (13-0) is ranked No. 2 in the country and is the second-seed in the tournament.
 
UCO won the doubles point with wins at the No. 3 and No. 1 positions. Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar won 6-1 at No. 3 before Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap won 6-4 at the top position to clinch the point. UCO left a 5-4 lead unfinished at the No. 2 spot.
 
Mae Canete, part of that unfinished doubles match, was the first to finish in singles play. At No. 2 Singles, the seventh-ranked player in the country won 6-0, 6-2 to give UCO a 2-0 lead in the match. Canete, a freshman from L.A., improved to 20-0 on the season.
 
Dunlap was second to finish and gave UCO a 3-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles.
 
Central had two matches on the verge of finishing for the clinching point. Abidullina won her first set 7-5 and had match point at No. 1 singles. But Boyar, who won her first set 6-4, picked up a 6-2 win in the second set to win her match at No. 6 singles and give UCO the clinching 4-0 victory.
 
Central Oklahoma reaches the national semifinals for the first time in school history with the win. The Bronchos play at 11 a.m. (CT) Thursday. The 2021 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championship is scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m.
