Historic Season Ends For Bronchos

SURPRISE, Ariz. – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team had its historic season come to an end Thursday with the Bronchos falling 4-1 to Barry in the NCAA Division II Women's Tennis National Championship Semifinals.

Central Oklahoma finished its 2020-21 season 21-2 overall. No Broncho team had made it to the national semifinals before this one. UCO also had a school-record 19-game win streak snapped with Thursday's loss. The Bronchos also reached the highest ranking in school history, with UCO listed No. 3 in the country in the latest ITA poll.

"I'm so proud of this team for everything we accomplished this season," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "Our goal was to win it all and we were really, really close to doing that. I'm proud of them for fighting so hard to get here and working so hard to get here. We'll be back."

Maestas wraps up his fifth year as head coach of the Bronchos and now has a career record of 78-22, a blistering .780 win percentage.

Barry won the doubles point Thursday taking wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. UCO did win 6-5 at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Mae Canete earned UCO its only points of the day. The freshman improved to 21-0 on the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles.

Barry, winners of the last three national titles, picked up wins at the 1, 4, & 6 positions to earn the win and move on to the national championship match Friday.
