Tennis Wins Title

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team won the 2021 MIAA regular season title Saturday following a 6-1 defeat of Missouri Western at Broncho Courts.

Central, ranked No. 4 in the country, went 8-0 in MIAA play this season to win its first regular season title since joining the league in 2012. UCO is now 16-1 this season and extended Saturday its school record 14-game win streak.

"I'm just proud," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "I'm proud of this team for how much they fought to get to this point. We've still got work to do. We can be better. But we're going to enjoy this first. I'm just proud of them."

Central Oklahoma took an early 1-0 lead in the match Saturday after wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Mae Canete and Paola Landin, ranked the 11th-best doubles team in the country, won 6-0 at the No. 2 position before Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar picked up a 6-2 win at the third position to give the Bronchos the doubles point.

In singles play, Buntrock was the first to finish with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. She bounced back after suffering her first loss of the season last week and is now 13-1 in her first year on campus.

Missouri Western made it 2-1 with a win at No. 4 singles, where Landin lost 6-3, 6-1. But the Bronchos had the answer.

Isabella Dunlap and Adel-Byanu Abidullina, who came up short in doubles play, losing 7-6, both won in singles play to clinch the match.

Dunlap, playing at No. 3, was third to finish with a 6-1, 6-2 win that made it 3-1, UCO. Then Abidullina clinched the championship with a 6-1, 6-2 win of her own at No. 1 singles.

Canete also won moments later, 7-6 (5), 6-0, at the No. 2 position in the lineup. Boyar added a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win at No. 6 to give Central Oklahoma the 6-1 win in the match.

The Bronchos now turn their attention to the postseason. UCO is hosting the 2021 MIAA Championships at Edmond Center Court next week. First round action begins Friday, April 30.
