Central Headed To MIAA Championship Match

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team opened the postseason Friday afternoon with a 4-0 sweep of Missouri Western in the 2021 MIAA Championship Semifinals at Edmond Center Court.

Central Oklahoma, 17-1 on the season, extended its record win streak to 15 matches with the victory and will play Washburn Saturday afternoon in the championship match.

"We're still trying to get better," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We played really well today, and we want to play really well tomorrow and finish this tournament off with a win. But we know we can still get better and that's the goal."

Saturday will mark the third consecutive championship appearance for Central Oklahoma, who came up short in 2018 before winning the title in 2019. The 2020 tournament was cancelled. UCO's win in 2019 was over Washburn.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead Friday with a point in doubles play thanks to wins at No. 1 and No. 3.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap, the fourth-ranked doubles team in the country, cruised to a 6-0 win at the top spot before Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Mae Canete and Paola Landin, ranked No. 11 in the country, held a 4-2 lead when their match was abandoned due to the other two victories by the Bronchos.

Leading 1-0, Canete wasted no time putting the Bronchos in control as the match moved to singles play. The rookie from Los Angeles, who was named MIAA Freshman of the Year earlier this week, won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles to give Central a 2-0 lead in the match. Canete improved to 16-0 on the season with the win.

Dunlap was next, taking a 6-3, 6-1 triumph at No. 3 singles to put the Bronchos up 3-0.

Then Landin clinched the match. The all-time wins leader at Central added to her collection with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 4 that sent the Bronchos into a celebration.

Washburn, which is the No. 2 seed in the tournament, beat No. 3 Northwest Missouri 4-3 Friday afternoon to earn a spot in the championship match.

UCO and Washburn met once earlier this season, in Edmond, and Central won 6-1. The Ichabods of Topeka, Kan. are 16-1 this season.
