No. 5 Central Crushes No. 19 Washburn

EDMOND - The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team beat Washburn 6-1 Friday afternoon in an MIAA battle of nationally rated foes.

Central Oklahoma, which is ranked No. 5 in the country, is now 10-1 on the season. Washburn, ranked 19th, is 9-1.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to an early lead after taking the doubles point. Mae Canete and Paola Landin cruised to a 6-0 win at No. 2 doubles before Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar won 6-2 at No. 3 doubles to give Central the point and the 1-0 lead in the dual.

The win at No. 2 doubles was the seventh in a row by Canete and Landin, who improved to 7-2 on the season. Buntrock and Boyar improved to 7-3 on the year with their win at No. 3 and now have won two in a row. 

Canete kept it going in singles play with a breezy 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. The win, which put UCO up 2-0 in the match, improved Canete's record to 10-0 on the season.

Adel-Byanu Abidullina was second to finish in singles play giving Central the 3-0 lead in the match. Abidullina won 6-1, 6-2 and is now 10-1 this season.

At No. 4 singles, Landin clinched the match for the Bronchos. The junior won in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-2 to put UCO ahead 4-0.

Boyar added a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 to make it 5-0. 

Washburn got its only point with a three-set win at No. 3. Buntrock also won, 5-7, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 5 to improve to 8-0 on the season. Her win in the final match of the day gave UCO its 6-1 victory.

Central Oklahoma is back in action Saturday afternoon. The Bronchos welcome Northwest Missouri to Broncho Courts with first serve scheduled for 1 p.m.
