Central Season Ends In MIAA Semifinals

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team saw its season come crashing to a close Friday when the Bronchos lost 104-72 to Northwest Missouri in the MIAA Championship Semifinals.

Central Oklahoma, the fifth-seed in the tournament, finished the season 13-11 after the loss the No. 1 seeded Northwest.

"There's a reason they're the No. 1 team in the country and they proved it tonight," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "You can't make any mistakes when you play a team like that and we just couldn't get it going tonight. I'm really proud of our guys for fighting to make it to this point. We've been competing so hard and to make to the semifinals is an accomplishment. It's not what we wanted but we need to be proud of it."

Central faced a tough battle in being tasked with the top-rated team in the country, and when the ball was tipped, Northwest didn't waste any time imposing its will on the Bronchos.

The Bearcats hit a 3-pointer to go in front 3-0 and never looked back. Northwest made each of its first seven 3-pointers and went 8-for-10 from outside in the first half.

UCO shot 41.4 percent in the first 20 minutes, making 12 of 29 shots. But the Bronchos went 0-for-4 from behind the arc and only got two free-throws in the first half. Eight UCO turnovers plagued the Bronchos early too, with NWMSU earning 16 points off turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Central worked to cut the deficit in the second half. The Bronchos took a 34-point deficit and cut it to 19 early in the second half. An 8-0 run by Central made it 63-44 with 15:35 to play. But Northwest kept up its torrid pace shooting the ball and the Bronchos couldn't keep up.

Northwest Missouri shot 60 percent from the floor Friday night, hitting 36 of 60 shots including a stout 14-for-25 from behind the arc. NWMSU also hit 18 of 19 shots from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma finished the game 27 of 57 from the floor, hitting 3 of 15 from outside. UCO went 15-for-16 from the free-throw line.

Isaiah Wade led Central Oklahoma with 29 points – a career-high for the senior forward. He also had a team-high six rebounds. Wade went 11-for-19 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. He also had three steals.

Callen Haydon scored 12 for the Bronchos on 5 of 12 shooting and added six assists. Camryn Givens made it three Bronchos in double figures, scoring 11 points to go with four rebounds. Givens was 4-for-9 from the floor and hit one 3-pointer.
