A Letter From The Athletic Director

Dear Bronchos,

Many things have changed for our student-athletes over the past year. Masks are mandatory, classes have shifted online, and a simple handshake with a friend is a thing of the past. Despite these uncertain times, we want our student-athletes to know the Broncho commitment to them is unwavering. Sports teach us to be strong and to adapt. This semester alone we are adapting every day and trying to turn challenges into opportunities.

After enduring a fall semester without Broncho football games for the first time since World War II, it was gratifying to successfully resume competition with winter sports of basketball, indoor track and wrestling. Even so, COVID-19 protocols have caused capacity limitations and other obstacles in engaging our fan base, at one point even preventing us from allowing spectators at athletic events. The hardships we face as a department due to the pandemic are likely to extend into future seasons, but with that comes additional opportunity to rally together.

Allow me to highlight one such opportunity where Bronchos can unite to make a difference. Recently, NCAA rulings extended the eligibility for seniors who had their seasons cut short for pandemic-related reasons. This affects literally every sport at UCO. We want these seniors to come back and finish strong – but the reality is for them to come back, we have to provide more scholarship dollars. The funding provided to these seniors will be exempt from normal scholarship limitations, making it possible to keep our commitment to existing and incoming student-athletes if we can raise additional funding.

To help make sure these Bronchos have the same experience despite the current challenges, we are launching a fundraising campaign.
