Bronchos Beat Flagler At ITA Indoors

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team won its ITA Indoor National Championship Quarterfinal matchup 4-2 over Flagler College Friday night at Edmond Center Court.

Mae Canete, playing at No. 2 singles, would do the honor of clinching the match for Central Oklahoma Friday night. The freshman from L.A. won 6-2 in the first set before losing 7-5 in the second set – her first lost set of the season. But she responded in a huge way with a 6-0 win in the third set to give the Bronchos a 4-2 lead and the victory.

"We fought," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "We fought like crazy. I'm really proud of this team. Last year we lost our first two in this tournament and I'm proud of the team for fighting to make sure that didn't happen again. That was a big win on a big stage and now we'll get ready for the next one."

Central Oklahoma had to make it a comeback. The Bronchos dropped the doubles point after losses at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. UCO had a lead at No. 2 doubles but the match went unfinished.

In singles play, Adel-Byanu Abidullina wasted no time dispatching Eden Schlagenhauf at No. 1. Abidullina, a two-time All-American, won the first set 6-2 before posting a 6-1 win in the second set.

Blythe Buntrock put Central in front with a win at the No. 5 spot in the lineup. The true freshman from Nevada won 6-2, 7-5 to make it 2-1 UCO.

Flagler got one point back at No. 4 singles, where Paola Landin lost 6-2, 7-5. That evened the match, 2-2. But Nikki Boyar won 7-6, 7-6 at No. 6 singles to put the Bronchos back in front, 3-2, before Canete finished the match.

Central Oklahoma advances to the ITA Indoor National Championship Semifinals. UCO will take on top-seeded Indianapolis Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. The winner of that match will play for the national title Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
