Central Completes Sweep Of Rogers State

Bronchos Win Fourth Straight With Victory In Claremore

CLAREMORE, Okla. – The University of Central Oklahoma used a big fourth quarter run to move in front of Rogers State and won 66-58 to sweep the season series from the Hillcats.

The Bronchos improved to 13-6 with the win.

"I'm glad we found a way late," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "We didn't play really well but we found a way to get it done in the end and that's what counts. We asked a lot of them to play three games in four days and we'll do it again next week. They answered the call and came away with a win."

Central Oklahoma needed to make it a comeback Sunday afternoon. The Bronchos trailed 57-53 with just over five minutes to play in the fourth quarter before a 13-1 run to end the game and get the victory.

Brooke Rayner started the run with a 3-pointer to cut it to one, 57-56. She then stole the ball on the next possession and took it in for a layup to give the Bronchos the lead for good. Tayler Factor added a 3-pointer on the following possession to make it 61-57, UCO, with three minutes to play.

After one free-throw from Rogers State, Central answered with a pair of free-throws by Rayner, one from Taylor Dement, and a jumper with 35 seconds left by Jaci Littell to make it 66-58.

Central led for 15:20 Sunday afternoon. Rogers State led for 15:57. The biggest lead the Bronchos had all day was the eight-point lead Littell gave them with 35 seconds left in the game.

Kelsey Johnson led the Bronchos with 19 points and 12 rebounds Sunday afternoon. She went 7-for-15 from the field and made 5 of 7 free-throw attempts. Rayner added 15 points to go with three assists and two steals.

Factor added a career-high 10 points off the bench on 4-for-4 shooting. She hit both of her 3-point attempts too. Clary Donica also scored 10 points off the bench and pulled down five rebounds to go with three blocked shots.

UCO trailed 18-15 after the first quarter of play. The Bronchos did hit 6 of 10 shots in the first quarter, but eight early turnovers proved costly.

Central played much better in the second quarter, giving up only seven total points in the 10 minute frame. Rogers was just 3 of 15 in the quarter. The Bronchos did only score 12 though on 5 of 13 shooting and went to the locker room at halftime with a 27-25 lead.

The game was tied heading into the fourth quarter tied, 42-42. Rogers State opened the quarter on an 10-1 run to build a big lead, but the Bronchos rallied back to get within two, 55-52, with 5:35 to play. After RSU scored on a layup with 5:05 to play, the Bronchos only surrendered a single free-throw after that.

Littell finished with two points and three rebounds. Avery Allen added two points and four assists. Aliyah Llanusa added four points, Maddie Harelson scored two, and Karly Wadsworth and Dement each scored one point.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the 2020-21 regular season next week. The Bronchos play three road games to close it out, taking on Missouri Western (Wednesday), Central Missouri (Thursday) and Missouri Southern (Saturday) to finish off the season. The 2020-21 MIAA Tournament is scheduled to begin March 3 and the Bronchos have qualified for the eight-team postseason tourney.
