Central Oklahoma Glides Past Griffons

Bronchos Never Trailed In Road Victory

SAINT JOSEPH, Mo. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team won its fifth consecutive game Wednesday night, with the Bronchos beating Missouri Western 83-75 in MIAA play.

The Bronchos never trailed Wednesday and led by as many as 18 points early in the second half. Central Oklahoma improved to 14-6 with the win.

"We shot the ball really well tonight and we played defense really well too," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "That's a good combination. We kind of hit a wall for a minute in the second half but I'm happy with the way the team played."

Brooke Rayner and Taylor Dement led Central with 16 points apiece and Kelsey Johnson and Caley Young both posted 14 points. Central shot 56.5 percent from the floor Wednesday night, hitting 35 of 62 overall. The Bronchos made six of 20 from behind the 3-point line and went 7-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Central Oklahoma and Missouri Western were tied on three occasions in the early going. It was 2-2, 4-4, and 6-6 before a Taylor Factor layup made it 8-6. Aliyah Llanusa added a layup and Jaci Littell knocked down the first of her three 3-pointers and suddenly UCO led 13-6. Central never trailed again.

Later in the opening quarter, Dement hit a 3-pointer, then made a layup, then Llanusa added a layup of her own and the Bronchos worked to a 22-15 lead after the first 10 minutes of play.

Littell hit her second three of the night on the first possession of the second quarter to go up by 13 points. Missouri Western cut it to six later in the second quarter and then three, 30-27, with 4:25 to play till halftime. But UCO just kept working, slowly but surely, and built a 12-point lead at halftime, 48-36.

In the third quarter, Young started it off with a jumper and Missouri Western countered with a layup, but Young again, then Johnson, then Rayner and after an 8-2 start to the half, Central led by 18 points, 56-38, with 7:30 to play in the third quarter.

Missouri Western made its biggest run after that. The Griffons would outscore Central 20-7 over the next seven minutes to cut the deficit from 18 to five, 63-58, as the game turned to the final quarter. UCO was 3-for-8 during the run and had nine turnovers.

It was still a three-point game two minutes into the fourth quarter when a big run by the Bronchos essentially sealed the deal. Young knocked down a jumper and Dement scored on a layup before MWSU added two. Then Young scored again on a jumper before Rayner scored an and-1 to make it 76-66 to cap off a 9-2 run.

Central scored five straight again in the fourth to go up 81-68 with 2:40 to play. Missouri Western did score the last five points of the game but it was too little too late against Central Oklahoma.

Rayner scored 16 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including one 3-pointer and three free-throws. She also had four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Dement scored a season-high 16 points on 7 of 10 shooting, hitting two 3-pointers. She also had two boards, one assist, one steal, and one blocked shot.

Johnson and Young had near identical numbers. Both had 14 points and five rebounds. Johnson was 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. She also had three assists. Young was 6-for-12 from the field and also went 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. She added three steals and two assists.

Littell finished with nine points, all from three 3-pointers and had three rebounds and two steals. Llanusa scored six, Kaci Richardson scored four, and Avery Allen and Factor both scored two.

Central Oklahoma will wrap up the 2020-21 regular season this weekend. The Bronchos take on Central Missouri Thursday night in Warrensburg, Mo. before taking on Missouri Southern in Joplin, Mo. Saturday.
