No. 8 Central Sweeps Midwestern State

Bronchos Take Every Point In Runaway Win

EDMOND – In a Top 25 showdown for the first official match of the 2021 season for the University of Central Oklahoma tennis team, it was the No. 8 Bronchos that swept 16th-ranked Midwestern State 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Oak Tree Tennis Center.

Central had a trip to San Angelo, Texas canceled earlier in the week and picked up Midwestern State on the schedule, setting up a tough opponent right out of the gate for the Bronchos. But it would be no mind to Central.

The Bronchos earned the doubles point after wins at No. 1 and No. 3, then got six victories in six matches of singles play to earn the sweep.

"I'm really proud of the team for the way they played today," UCO head tennis coach Jaron Maestas said. "Everyone went out there against a very tough opponent and played really good."

Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap earned a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles and Blythe Buntrock and Nikki Boyar picked up a 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to give the Bronchos a 1-0 lead in the match.

Mae Canete was the first to finish in singles play. The freshman won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Boyar won next at No. 6 singles, taking a 6-1, 7-5 victory to give the Bronchos a 3-0 lead in the match.

Buntrock then earned her first career singles victory at No. 5, winning 7-5, 6-0 to secure the victory for Central with a 4-0 lead.

Abidullina won 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1, Paola Landin won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4, and Dunlap won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 to give Central a perfect 7-0 score in the match.

The Bronchos will be back in action next weekend. Central is scheduled to host Cameron on Saturday, Feb. 20 and Cowley County Sunday, Feb. 21.
