No. 4 UCO Rolls Over No. 13 UIndy

EDMOND (Nov. 14) – Brik Filippo and Anthony DesVigne used third-period rallies to pull out one-point wins to spark No. 4-ranked Central Oklahoma to a 30-6 romp over No. 13 Indianapolis Sunday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos won the first six matches to take control of the dual and dropped just a pair of one-point decisions. UCO earned bonus points at three weights as 197 Dalton Abney had a first-period fall, 125 Paxton Rosen a technical fall and 133 Tanner Cole a major decision.

It was the comebacks by Filippo at 149 and DesVigne at 165 that most energized the vocal crowd as the Bronchos won their ninth straight home dual.

Filippo knocked off 10th-ranked Logan Bailey 5-4 behind two last-period takedowns. The junior trailed 2-1 entering the final stanza and let Bailey go early in the period before striking for a quick takedown to tie it.

Filippo cut Bailey again with less than a minute remaining, but stayed on the attack and got the go-ahead takedown with 24 seconds left. He easily controlled Bailey the rest of the match to close out the comeback.

DesVigne was down 3-1 to No. 12 Jack Eiteljorge going into the last two minutes, but escaped early in the third period and struck for the go-ahead takedown with 55 seconds left. The sophomore had no problem riding Eiteljorge the remainder of the period to cap the hard-fought win.

"I was really happy with our conditioning today and I think that really paid off for Brik and Anthony," head coach Todd Steidley said. "They stayed after it in the third period and came through with big wins.

"Overall I thought we wrestled pretty well and did a lot of good things. We're making progress, but need to stay humble and keep working hard like we have been."

Rosen staked Central to a quick 5-0 lead with his 18-3 drubbing in the opening match as the junior All-American racked up six takedowns and a near-fall.

Cole had three takedowns and a pair of near-falls in cruising to a 12-3 rout, then Nate Keim used a first-period takedown and punishing third-period ride to notch a 4-1 triumph at 141.

Filippo followed with his comeback win and Ty Lucas continued the dual-opening streak with a methodical 7-2 victory at 157 behind a three-takedown attack. DesVigne's narrow win pushed the lead to 21-0.

The Bronchos got their other two wins from defending national champion Heath Gray and Abney, both ranked No. 1. Gray earned his 43rd straight win and Abney struck for a takedown in the opening seconds before getting the lone fall of the day in just 1:01.

Kalin Winkler and Braden Morgan both dropped one-point decisions, with Winkler falling 4-3 at 174 to fifth-ranked Andrew Sams while Morgan lost 1-0 to a third-period escape.

UCO is back in action Saturday when it travels to St. Charles, Mo. for the Lindenwood Open.
