UCO Knocks Off No. 13 Washburn

Isaiah Wade Layup With Two Seconds Left Made The Difference

EDMOND – Jaden Wells caught an inbounds pass with nine seconds to play, gathered himself, drove into the lane, and dished to Isaiah Wade for an easy layup with two seconds left and the University of Central Oklahoma beat No. 13-ranked Washburn 74-72 at Hamilton Field House Saturday afternoon.

Wade finished with a team-high 21 points and a game-high 18 rebounds to lead Central to the win.

"That was a great find by Jaden when we were really just looking to get anything up with as little time left on the clock as possible," UCO head men's basketball coach Bob Hoffman said. "What a pass. And Isaiah did what he did all night and put it in. I'm so proud of these guys. We had a pretty tough first semester and then coming out of Christmas with so many games postponed, these guys just keep fighting and finding ways to win."

UCO is 5-5 this season, but 4-1 since the calendar turned to 2021.

Wade's monster double-double paced Central Saturday. It's a season-high for the senior forward in both points and rebounds. He shot 9 of 15 from the floor and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Callen Haydon also scored in double figures, posting 14 points on 6 of 7 shooting. He was 2-for-2 from the free-throw line too and added a game-high seven assists. Camryn Givens joined Wade and Haydon in double figures with 10. He hit two 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the line.

The teams went back and forth all day Saturday afternoon, with both schools managing no more than a five-point lead in the first 20 minutes of play. Washburn went up 26-21 with 6:59 to play in the first half and Central found itself up 39-34 with 19 seconds left in the first half. Those two instances were the biggest leads for either team.

UCO got its lead thanks to a Conner Calavan 3-pointer. The true freshman had just knocked down another with 1:11 to play to put the Bronchos up 36-34. Central held a 3-point lead with 9:52 to play, but aside from two more ties, it was not until Calavan's first three that the Bronchos found the lead again.

UCO went into halftime with a 39-34 lead thanks to Calavan's second shot from deep. He got a third look at the buzzer but missed right on the shot that would have made it 42-34.

Central went up by as many as 10 points early in the second half. The Bronchos opened the half on a 10-5 run to take that lead. Wade had a huge slam with 16:25 to play coming out of a timeout after Central forced a shot clock violation against Washburn on the other end. Wade was also fouled while he dunked on his opponent and made the ensuing free-throw to go up 49-39 just three and a half minutes into the half.

Washburn closed that gap with an 8-0 run over the next two minutes though to keep it close. But Central had another rally in its plans.

The Bronchos led 52-49 with 11:52 to play at the media timeout. Central then led 58-51 at the next media timeout and ballooned that lead to 12 over the course of the next five minutes. UCO was up 69-57 with 4:44 to play, holding its biggest lead of the game.

However, after Givens made a 3-pointer to give Central that 12-point lead, Washburn answered back, going on a 15-3 run to tie the game, 72-72 with 39 seconds left.

UCO held the ball for most of its shot clock before Wells missed a 3-pointer from the right corner with 11 seconds left. Wade got the rebound on a jump ball with 9.4 to play and Central then lined up for its final, game-winning play. After Wade's layup with two seconds left, Washburn threw a pass halfway down the court and Haydon tipped it and Jalyn Turner stole the ball and the Bronchos claimed the victory.

Turner finished with four points, including one 3-pointer. Calavan and Shemar Smith both scored six off the bench. Wells finished with three, hitting a 3-pointer in the first half. Davon Richardson and Carson Calavan also scored three Saturday.

Central Oklahoma finished the afternoon shooting 45.6 percent from the floor, 34.8 percent from behind the arc, and 73.7 percent from the free-throw line. UCO hit 8 of 23 shots from outside and 14 of 19 from the stripe.

UCO will now turn its attention to what will be the busiest February in school history for the men's basketball program. Due to several games being postponed earlier this season, UCO is slated to play 12 games next month. The Bronchos start that marathon with Lincoln on Tuesday at 6 p.m. inside Hamilton Field House.
