Central Wins At Hays

HAYS, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team beat Fort Hays State 77-66 Saturday afternoon. It's the first time the Bronchos won in Hays under head coach Guy Hardaker.

"We played well today and we got a lot of help from different people," Hardaker said. "We started slow, but we settled down and got some things going. We played hard. I'm proud of the team today."

Central Oklahoma is now 16-7 on the season and 10-5 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Atheltics Association standings. The win also clinched a spot in the MIAA Championship for the Bronchos next month.

Clary Donica led UCO in scoring Saturday. The sophomore forward scored 19 points on 7 of 13 shooting, knocking down all four 3-pointers she attempted. Donica also pulled down nine rebounds. Kelsey Johnson scored 16 points and had a team-high 11 rebounds. Micayla Haynes scored 14 and Shatoya Bryson, 11, to help the Broncho effort.

Central Oklahoma got off to a slow start. The Bronchos missed the first 11 shots they took from the floor. However, thanks to a stout defense, Central only trailed 6-0 at the first quarter media timeout. Bryson scored the game's first bucket for the Bronchos out of that timeout. UCO then pressed to a 12-11 deficit after the first quarter.

McKenna Pulley gave the Bronchos their first lead of the game. Her layup to start the second quarter moved the score to 13-12. There were five lead changes in the second frame, but when UCO went up 24-22 on a Bryson 3-pointer with 5:59 to play in the second quarter, the Bronchos didn't trail again.

UCO held a 34-29 lead at halftime.

Central came out firing in the third quarter. The Bronchos hit 5 of 7 3-pointers, Donica knocking down three from outside, and UCO built a big lead, going up 14, 53-39, with 4:19 to play in the quarter. Hays responded and rallied back to cut into the lead heading into the final quarter. But UCO held firm ahead down the stretch.

UCO's starting lineup scored 65 of the team's 77 points. Aside from the four starters in double figures, Jaci Littell added five points, including one 3-pointer. Pulley scored five points off the bench, Aliyah Llanusa added four, and Kaci Richardson, who hit one 3-pointer, scored three.

The Bronchos finished 27 of 61 from the floor, 9 of 16 from behind the arc, and went 14-for-16 from the free-throw line on the day.

Central Oklahoma concluded its regular season road schedule with Saturday's game. The Bronchos will be home for the final three weeks of the 2019-20 season. UCO hosts Newman next Saturday, Emporia State the following Saturday, and Nebraska Kearney and FHSU on the final weekend of this month.
