Central Powers Past Newman

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team beat Newman Saturday afternoon 68-60 in a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association game at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos improved to 17-7 with the win and are now 11-5 in the MIAA.

"We let them get way too many uncontested shots early," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "You can't do that with a good shooting team and they made us pay for that. But we did a good job adjusting at halftime and played better defensively in the second half. I'm proud of the girls for making that adjustment and getting the win."

Kelsey Johnson led UCO with a game-high 24 points, which is also a career-high for the junior from Washington, Okla. Johnson was 10-for-14 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. She also had seven rebounds, a game high as well.

Central also got double figures from Shatoya Bryson, who scored 14 points, and Micayla Haynes, who scored 13.

UCO scored the first basket of the game, a layup from Johnson, but after Newman hit a 3-pointer on the end, the Jets of Wichita, Kan. led for a long while after that. Newman hit 5 of 8 threes in the opening period and led 21-13 after the first 10 minutes.

UCO outscored Newman 14-12 in the second period to cut the deficit from eight to six at the half, 33-27.

Central finally cracked the seal in the third quarter. A 7-0 run midway through the quarter gave the Bronchos their first lead since the first quarter. Johnson made a pair of baskets and Bryson knocked down one of her two 3-pointers in the game to give the Bronchos a 44-39 lead. Newman responded though, ending the quarter on a 7-1 run to take a 46-45 lead heading into the final quarter.

But the Bronchos saved their best frame for last. UCO outscored Newman 23-14 in the final quarter. Johnson scored eight in the final frame. She had a pair of layups in which she made the basket and drew a foul. She hit both of her free-throw attempts on those, sparking a dominating ending for the Bronchos.

Central Oklahoma finished the game 22 of 57 from the floor, hitting only 6 of 26 threes, but 18 of 22 free-throws.

Kaci Richardson added seven points off the bench for the Bronchos. Clary Donica, Jaci Littell, and McKenna Pulley all scored three.

Central Oklahoma only had one game this week, and will play the same schedule net Saturday. The Bronchos host Emporia State Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. in Hamilton Field House.
