Central Clipped In ITA Quarterfinals

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma tennis team came up short against Columbus State in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Indoor National Championship Quarterfinals Friday night at Oak Tree, falling 4-2 in a battle of heavyweight foes.
 
Central is hosting the inaugural event and will play the University of Indianapolis in the consolation semifinals Saturday. The Bronchos are ranked ninth in the country and are the seven-seed in the tournament. CSU is third nationally and the second-seed in the eight-team field.
 
Central Oklahoma opened the match with a pair of doubles wins to take a 1-0 lead over Columbus State. Adel-Byanu Abidullina and Isabella Dunlap won 6-2 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. CSU had the doubles split with a win at the No. 2 spot, but Lotte Lesscher Y Post and Mariona Franco Martin won 6-4 at the No. 3 spot to give the Bronchos an early lead.
 
After the break, Franco Martin made quick work of her opponent at the No. 6 spot in the singles lineup and gave the Bronchos a 2-0 lead in the match. The freshman from Barcelona won 6-3, 6-0.
 
Columbus State got on the board with a win at No. 4 singles, upending Lesscher Y Post 7-6, 6-1. The Cougars then earned wins at No. 3 and No. 2 singles to take a 3-2 lead in the match. Dunlap fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 and Landin lost by the same score at No. 3.
 
CSU clinched the match with a third-set win at No. 5, taking a 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 win over Boyar. Abidullina was also in a third-set at No. 1 singles.
 
Central Oklahoma will take on Indianapolis Saturday in the consolation semifinal. The Bronchos are now 3-1 on the season.
