UCO Rally Falls Short Against Emporia

EDMOND (Feb. 22) – Free throws proved to be the difference in Central Oklahoma's 64-56 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association loss to Emporia State Saturday afternoon at Hamilton Field House.

The Bronchos were whistled for 24 fouls in getting outscored 24-8 at the charity stripe and lost to Emporia for the second time this season. UCO fell to 17-8 overall and 11-6 in the league, while the Hornets improved to 20-6 and 13-4.

"We got down early and used a lot of energy getting back in the game," head coach Guy Hardaker said. "I was proud of the way we battled, but they kept getting to the line and it was hard for us to overcome that."

Brooke Rayner led Central's balanced attack with 13 points. Shatoya Bryson hit all four of her 3-point tries in adding 12 points, Kaci Richardson chipped in 10 and a trio of other players had eight points apiece.

The Bronchos had trouble penetrating Emporia's aggressive zone defense from the outset and never led. UCO trailed 41-31 at intermission, fell behind by 17 (50-33) early in the third period and was down 15 (54-39) before mounting a spirited comeback.

Rayner drained back-to-back 3-pointers to ignite the rally and later added a fast-break layup off a turnover. Aliyah Llanusa also knocked down a trey from the wing during the 15-4 run that pulled the Bronchos within 58-54 by the end of the third period.

Richardson converted an old-fashioned three-point play to open the final quarter in pulling UCO within one at 58-57, but the Bronchos could never gain the lead.

Central got within one again at 65-64 after Micayla Hayes drilled a corner 3-pointer with 3:26 left to play, but ESU put the game away with a 7-0 run that made it 72-64 with 1:59 remaining.

The Bronchos end the regular season next week with two more home games, hosting Fort Hays State Feb. 27 and Nebraska-Kearney Feb. 29.
