Central Oklahoma Comes Up Short At Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped an 80-70 MIAA matchup Thursday night against Washburn.

Kelsey Johnson led the Bronchos with 31 points and eight rebounds, reaching the 30-point mark for the second time this season with a new career high. Karly Wadsworth added a season-high 16 points aided by four made 3-pointers. And Brooke Rayner scored 10 points off the bench.

Central and Washburn went back and forth for nearly three out of four quarters. In the first, both teams held an early lead. Johnson scored the game's first five points to give the Bronchos theirs. Washburn answered with a run, but despite a handful of early turnovers for UCO the first 10 minutes ended with a 20-20 tie.

UCO owned the second quarter and took its biggest lead of the game just over midway through, leading by 11 points. Johnson continued her dominant play and finished the first half with 19 points and five rebounds. Central led 37-33 at the break.

UCO held strong for a good part of the third quarter, but midway through and with no notice, Washburn came storming back. Central led 49-47 with 2:42 to play in the quarter, but hit a wall and didn't score the rest of the way through the quarter. Washburn at the same time happened to get hot and ended the quarter on a 12-0 run, taking a 10-point lead into the final quarter.

Central tied Washburn in the final frame 21-21 as the Bronchos were unable to chip into the lead. Washburn's biggest lead was 16 down the stretch. UCO cut it down to eight with 30 seconds to play but couldn't get any closer.

The Bronchos finished the game 26-for-56 overall at 46.4 percent. UCO hit eight total 3-pointers. To go with Wadsworth's four from outside, Johnson and Rayner each hit two. The Bronchos also finished with 10 made free-throws on the night.

Central Oklahoma will continue a short road trip Saturday. The Bronchos will visit Emporia, Kansas and take on Emporia State at 3 p.m.
