Cold Night Stuns Bronchos

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team dropped its second MIAA contest in a row Saturday after a blistering cold performance on offense hindered the efforts inside Hamilton Field House. Nebraska Kearney won 63-43.

Central shot 23.1 percent from the field for the game and missed each and every attempt from behind the arc, going 0-for-15 from outside.

"I don't think we played really well in general," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "But then we couldn't make a shot either. So you're putting to negatives together. That's never good. We need to just forget about this one and move on and get ready for the next one."

UCO never had a lead Saturday. The Bronchos trailed 4-0 in the first quarter and responded with a 4-0 run to tie the game. But Nebraska Kearney answered with an 8-0 run and led 12-6 after the first quarter. Central only hit 2 of 14 shots in the first 10 minutes.

Central played its best basketball in the second quarter. The Bronchos still hit just 4 of 12 shots but kept themselves in the game by hitting 8 of 11 free-throws in the second quarter.

The struggles returned though in the third quarter. UNK outscored UCO 17-8 after halftime and held a 39-30 lead going into the final quarter. Then Kearney played its best quarter. The Lopers went 8-for-9 in the fourth quarter and added seven free-throws on eight attempts. A near perfect quarter. The 24-13 advantage in the final 10 minutes doomed Central.

UCO was led by Kelsey Johnson, who scored 15 points and had a team-high nine rebounds. Johnson hit 5 of 12 shots and went 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Taylor Dement scored seven points off the bench and Clary Donica added six. Jaci Littell and Kaci Richardson both had four points. Avery Allen, Maddie Harelson and Caley Young each scored two.

Central Oklahoma is back in action next Tuesday. The Bronchos will play Fort Hays State in an MIAA game at 6 p.m. Dec. 15 at Hamilton Field House.
