UCO Comes Up Short Against Hays

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma women's basketball team lost 80-61 to Fort Hays State Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House in an MIAA matchup.

Central only led once, 4-2, in the game, and a second consecutive game which the Bronchos didn't shoot the ball well, led to another setback for UCO.

"We've just had a bad few days shooting the ball and that's been a killer," UCO head coach Guy Hardaker said. "I don't think we're playing that well overall but when you don't shoot the ball well you don't have much of a chance."

Kelsey Johnson led UCO once again, scoring 22 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Johnson was 8-for-11 from the field and added 6 of 7 free-throws.

Johnson was the only Broncho in double figures. Kaci Richardson added seven points as did Brooke Rayner. Central shot 33.9 percent from the floor, making 20 of 59 shots. The Bronchos hit just 4 of 19 3-pointers. The bright spot for UCO was from the free-throw line as Central went 16-for-19.

Central held its only lead of the first half in the first quarter. After a pair of free-throws from Fort Hays State opened the game, Johnson scored a layup to put the Bronchos on the scoreboard, then added two free-throws of her own to give Central an early 4-2 lead.

Hays answered though and retook the lead, 7-4, then held that lead for the rest of the first half. The Tigers led 16-11 after one quarter.

Central did good responding in the second quarter. The Bronchos continued to struggle shooting the ball, making just four shots in the first quarter and only two in the second. But a 9-for-11 mark from the free-throw line aided Central's comeback effort. Hays led by just two, 26-24, at halftime.

Johnson's 12 points led the Bronchos in the first 20 minutes. Central was hampered by a 6-for-22 shooting performance in the first half, making just 22.2 percent of its shots. The Bronchos hit one 3-pointer on 11 tries. And UCO was 11-for-13 from the free-throw line.

But out of the locker room, Central caught a hot Fort Hays State team. The Tigers scored 25 in the third quarter thanks to five 3-pointers and 6-for-7 free-throws. In the fourth, Hays scored 30 points thanks to five more 3-pointers and 11 free-throws.

The Bronchos did improve their shooting in the second half, hitting 6 of 16 shots overall and 2 of 7 from behind the arc. In the final 10 minutes, Central hit 8 of 16 shots overall, its only 3-point attempt, and 5 of 6 free-throws.

Clary Donica added six points for the Bronchos, Taylor Dement scored five, and Jaci Littell and Avery Allen both scored four. Maddie Harelson and Tayler Factor both scored two points and Aliyah Llanusa added one.

UCO has one more game this week. The Bronchos take on Newman Saturday in Wichita, Kansas. Tipoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
