Know The 'Chos: Kelsey Johnson

The University of Central Oklahoma athletic department is showcasing its student-athletes each Monday this fall with a quick glance at who your favorite Bronchos are on and off the court in a segment called Know The 'Chos, sponsored by McBride Orthopedic Hospital.

Up this week is a women's basketball player that is set to lead the Bronchos back on to the court this winter. An All-MIAA selection and unquestionably one of the best post players in the league as well as the country.

She set a school record last season – her first in Bronze & Blue – by posting a 60.2 field goal percentage for the entire season. In 50 years of women's basketball at Central, no player has ever accomplished such a feat.

She also posted six double-doubles a season ago and scored in double figures in 24 of 28 games.

Here's the file:

Name: Kelsey Johnson

Hometown: Washington, Okla.

Sport: Basketball

Class: Senior (Grad Student)

Major: Family & Life Education master's program.

Favorite memory at Central: My favorite memory at UCO is beating Fort Hays at their place. It was one of the most exciting games I've even been a part of.

Best part of UCO: Gamedays!

More about this student-athlete: Arrived at Central before her junior season and made an immediate impact, playing and starting in every game for the Bronchos while leading the team in scoring and rebounding. Transferred to UCO from UT-Arlington, where she earned her bachelor's degree.

Johnson played in all 28 games for the Bronchos as a junior and started each of them. She led the team in scoring at 14.1 points per game and also led the team in rebounds at 6.6 per game. Not satisfied, Johnson also led the team free-throws made (73), free-throws attempted (90), and free-throw percentage (81.1) as well as blocked shots (36).

She played in 54 games in two seasons for Mavericks while at UTSA.

Johnson was an All-State selection out of Washington High School and a three-time state qualifier and state runner-up in 2016. She was named to The Oklahoman's All-State and All-City teams.
