UCO Cruises to Win Over Central Missouri

EDMOND – The University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team stomped Central Missouri Saturday afternoon, winning the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association matchup at Hamilton Field House 77-51.

UCO is now 5-8 on the season, but has won two MIAA games in a row. The Bronchos are 2-2 in league play.

"We fought hard early to establish ourselves and I'm proud of the guys for coming out like that," UCO head coach Bob Hoffman said. "The guys are figuring out some things and it's fun to watch. They're realizing they can be pretty good if they do things a certain way. I'm enjoying watching them grow."

UCO got yet another big game from D.J. Basey. The true freshman, who averaged 17 points per game in the final week of play before the holiday break, scored a game-high 14 Saturday, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. Basey also had two rebounds and two blocked shots.

Central Oklahoma also got a big performance off the bench from senior Cooper Clark. The Norman, Okla. native scored 12 points on 2-for-5 shooting. Both his field goals were 3-pointers. He added six more from the line, hitting 6 of 7 free-throws on the day.

UCO got a lead early, going up 5-0 after just 90 seconds of play. UCM responded, tying the game, 7-7, with 15 minutes to go in the opening half. After a quick back-and-forth, Central Missouri found its biggest lead, 14-9, with 13:05 to play.

But after Central Missouri led by that same margin, 16-11 with 10:30 to play, UCO went on its biggest run of the entire season. Central Oklahoma scored the next 19 points, taking a 30-16 lead 4:07 to play. Basey kicked off the run with a layup at the 9:50 mark to cut the UCM lead to three, 16-13. Central shot 4-for-5 from the field during the six-minute run, hitting 1 of 2 from behind the arc and 10 of 12 from the free-throw line. Alex Ogunseye, who had a team-high six points during the run, had the last two on a pair of free-throws with 4:07 to play.

With just five seconds left in the half and Central Oklahoma leading 36-23, UCM was called for a personal foul and Joshua Greer got a technical foul for his response to the whistle. Clark hit one of two free-throws for the tech and both of the free-throws for the personal foul to put the Bronchos up 38-23. Then Dashawn McDowell stole the inbounds pass and dished to Jayln Turner, who laid up a basket as time ran off the clock and gave the Bronchos a 17-point halftime lead, 40-23.

After the break, the teams alternated baskets to start the half. But the 17-point margin, 42-25, with 19:26 to play, would be the closest the game was for the final 20 minutes. UCO led by as many as 27, up 72-45 with 3:07 to play after a pair of McDowell free-throws. The Bronchos cruised to the win down the stretch.

McDowell scored nine points and added seven rebounds to help the cause Saturday. UCO had 11 of 12 players that stepped on the court scored. Ogunseye and Carson Calavan both added eight points, Turner and Colt Savage scored seven, Camryn Givens added five, Dashon Bell and Seth Hurd scored three, and Justin Nimmer scored one.

The Bronchos shot a combined 53.5 percent from the floor Saturday, hitting 23 of 53 field goal attempts. UCO hit 6 of 18 3-pointers and made 25 of 33 free-throws.

Central Oklahoma began Saturday a four-games in seven-days stretch. The Bronchos will host Lincoln Monday night at 7:30 p.m. before traveling to face Missouri Southern Thursday and Pittsburg State next Saturday.
